No, I don't think that's right. His first daughter was born in about 1984, then his first son was adopted as an infant in 1991/2.
Then there is some vagueness about what happened, but he divorced Krista Neumann in 1995, and he and Chelsea Field had a son born later that same year. (He filmed A Passion To Kill with Chelsea Field in 1994, but I don't know if that was when they began their relationship.) They had a second son in 1999. They never publicly announced their wedding, but he was reportedly seen to be wearing a wedding ring again around 2007, and there is a photo of them which has all the hallmarks of a wedding photo. In that photo he is wearing his hair the same way he wore it in Men of a Certain Age.
He was interviewed in The Captains by William Shatner and he briefly alluded to the fact that the long hours he had to spend working on Quantum Leap contributed to the breakup of his first marriage. -

I always thought he'd make a great partner and thought that the first time I saw him in Quantum Leap.turns out we are very close in age which tickled me pink
Never had the pleasure of meeting him though. Thrilled to see hes gotten back on tv and will be on the New Orleans streets, right next door to Texas where I am One must just dream on
