Excellent film, and remarkable in that the facial and body contortions in the transformation scenes.
For my money, Barrymore's performance ranks right up there with Max Schreck's "Nosferatu" and Lon Chaney's "The Phantom of the Opera" in silent horror.1c84 -

Yes it is out on DVD. You can either rent it through Netflix, or buy it (beware thoughit IS available at bargain basement prices, but the copy is ususally not as good. For the extra money, KINO has a good print of it.)

Some people tell me: "Haven't seen Barrymore on Dr Jekyll but I only can say that Frederic March was 10/10"
I haven't seen march playing Dr Jekyll but when I saw Barrymore playing in this movie I just realized once more the big capacity of this man to perform the most variated characters and with that passion that he shows as Dr Jekyll. The transformation was a "oeuvre d'art" he was such a wonderful actor. -

I don't think I can agree w/ you on that. I caught March's DJ&MH on TCM & was completely engrossed by him & the film, LOVED IT! I then proceeded to look for the 1920 Barrymore version, watched Tracy's on TCM next & they both don't compare to March. I gave March & that movie a 10/10!

Barrymore's DJ&MH is probably the most available JB movie online. It is listed all over the place. It began filming in November 1919 and was completed as he was performing on Broadway in The Jest (his 4th serious play), and preparing for his Richard III. His career was still heading toward his peak, which was Hamlet in New York and finally, London.
After first viewing a few of his later films, to see him in the silent era's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is an amazing experience. His rare gifts as an actor are undeniable, and the work he invested in his talent shows. It ranks along with the best of all silent movies. ~nicardo@cox.net.
