Is it true that back in the day, people thought cocain was a medicine and that John Barrymore had the studios provide him with $2000 a week for him to buy coke because he had some illness?

There's no evidence or mention in any of the four JB bios I've read that any studio provided coke. He drank. A lot. That was enough.
