Ralph Bellamy was one of the true legends in hollywood. Look at all the work he did over the years. How many actors out there today will work that long. I'm sure not many. Plus just look at the scenes that he is in. He just seems to have that authority that keeps my eyes fixed on him. Seems to be the kind of man you would1c84 like to have as your father. Ralph thanks for all of your great work and your lasting legacy you left us. You were truly one of the greats. Rich

I think his performance in His Girl Friday is really phenomenal and underrated work. It takes a lot of subtly to make a character likeable while still proving he's the wrong match for the leading lady.
I recently wrote a full review of His Girl Friday. If you're interested you can check it out here:

He was fantastic in HIS GIRL FRIDAY [and THE AWFUL TRUTH], but I never understood why certain people today b68feel that Ralph Bellamy only played dull and boring characters who lose the girl to Cary Grant. He only did that a couple of times on screen. I imagine those very people have only seen Bellamy in those couple of films. He played lawyers, doctors, detectives, gangsters, cowboys and the President. He was a class act as a man and actor and played a wide variety of roles. He was delightful as Ellery Queen, and brilliant in ROSEMARY'S BABY, and was the best thing about TRADING PLACES.
I also cannot get over the idea that he was only nominated for the Academy Award ONCE!! He was great in THE AWFUL TRUTH, but he should have been nominated for films like THE COURT-MARTIAL OF BILLY MITCHELL [1955], and his magnificent turn as FDR in SUNRISE AT CAMPOBELLO [1960].
