I know Richard Beymer himself wasn't happy with his performance, but I think it was very strong and the most memorable of the film. He was the charasmatic, mature guy the other gang members looked up toa leader; a smart guy with a future who was apart from the thugs. Tony was loyal to the gang, but he had a good job and a positive outlook on life. He reluctantly got sucked into the violence. The fact that he was the all-American boy who never cut ties with the Jets made the circumstances all the more tragic.
Richard Beymer was very convincing as Tony and he conveyed all the emotional highs and lows perfectly. -

I don't think the problem was Richard Beymer. His role alone, Ben Horne, on Twin Peaks had a thousand times more personality than Tony. It was the way it was written to where Tony and Maria were the least interesting part about Weat Side Story

I agree. He was strong.
Strongly miscast, strongly soft, strongly toothful, strongly uninteresting.
