I remember reading from somewhere that Natalie preferred James Dean to play the character instead of another actor for "Rebel Without a Cause." I wonder if the "other actor" was Richard Beymer.
In one interview regarding "West Side Story," either Natalie or Richard said that they didn't talk much on set and were not friends because of different personalities and they just didn't get along as people, but that they were professional toward each other.
In another interview, Richard joked, "We exchanged maybe five sentences at most on set." ("We" meaning Natalie and him).
I hope that cleared some things up for you! 🐵

His 2nd quote on the page says that they (him and Natalie) sort of buried the hatchet a few years later. Good for them.

As much as I love Richard Beymer, he would not have been right for Jim Stark, if that was the character he was going to play. James Dean is just about the best.

                    what talented actors they are.
They were totally believable as love intrests, when in reality, they weren't even good friends.
It's good that they patched things up, though.

Woo woo wee wa, very nice.

I doubt she stopped him from getting the role because it took a lot of work for her to even get into Rebel.
It is credit to them both as actors that even though they didn't get along they still portrayed (one of mine) favourite love stories.
I heard that Natalie Wood was pushing for Warren Beatty for the role of Tony and was a bit annoyed of the fact Richard got the role. I am so glad he did btw, I cannot imagine Warren as Tony.

Natalie was offered the role of Anne in the Diary of Anne Frank (1959), but turned it down. And Richard was Peter in the movie. I wonder if that had anything to do with it.
Well, I'm glad that they patched things up years later. It still amazes me how they never talked at all outside of the scenes on WSS, but onscreen it looked like they were totally compatible.

It seems the more I read about Natalie Wood, the less I like her.
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.
