He was supposed to be the lead in The Beach, Fox wanted DiCaprio instead since he'd just come off Titanic, Fox offered to up the budget as a result, McGregor didn't get the film role, McGregor fell out with Boyle. Apparently they have spoken since, but there's still a big question mark over whether McGregor will do 'Porno' or not with Boyle.

McGregor Still Angry With Boyle Over The Beach Snub

Ewan McGregor refuses to end his decade-long feud with filmmaker Danny Boyle because he still feels sore about the way he was axed from The Beach in favour of Leonardo DiCaprio.
The pair formed a close friendship after collaborating on 1996 movie Trainspotting, and Boyle promised McGregor the lead role in 2000 blockbuster The Beach - but handed the part to DiCaprio instead.
McGregor heaped praise on Boyle's 2009 movie Slumdog Millionaire, sparking speculation actor and director would heal their rift - but the Scottish star insists he's still not speaking to the moviemaker.
He tells Britain's The Times magazine, "You just don't treat your friends like that. They absolutely made me think that I was playing the character in The Beach and we talked about (filming) dates and moving dates and so on, and all the while they were keeping me there just in case Leonardo pulled out - which is really nasty.
"And then afterwards, I just didn't hear from Danny for years. When he told me, he was very conflicted and he was very upset, and I spent a lot of time making him feel better and saying, 'No, it's alright, I understand'. And when I went home, I thought beep doesn't feel very nice.' And my wife was furious.
"I phoned up the producer Andrew (Macdonald), who I felt was part of the team. And I said, 'Andrew, I've just had lunch with Danny and I don't understand. I didn't think that's really what we were about. I thought we were about something else. I really thought we stood for something.' And he went, 'Come on, it was gonna happen sooner or later'. And then I never heard from them for years."
And McGregor was left fuming when he was approached by movie bosses to resurrect his Trainspotting character for a big screen adaption of author Irvine Welsh's follow-up Porno.
He adds, "I shouldn't really talk about this, but they wanted me to do Porno. So I got a semi-apology: 'Feel like we didn't handle that very well anyway, would you like to do Porno?'" -

It's really too bad. I really hope they can put it behind them and make some more films. It has been a long time. And both of them were at their best when working together (haven't seen life less ordinary). I probably shouldn't get my hopes up, but I hope they do another movie (soon) with Cillian in it as well. Get the two in the same film. The thing is though, Ewan's work has gone down while Cillian is still good in his other roles. I want to see another great Boyle McGregor film.

I don't know what McGregor7ec is pissed about. The Beach sucked, you think he would be glad that Boyle didn't cast him in it.
Exactly, The Beach was awful. He should be grateful he wasn't part of that piece of sh-t film.

Hey, I like that movie! OK, it's not great (and I don't like DiCaprio there), could've been better, but it has a good message ^^. But, anyway, I guess it's not about the movie that made Ewan pissed off, more of the way they treated him. Too bad. I didn't know about this feud until I read this.

I can feel Ewan's humiliation, but I get the feeling Boyle's hands were tied here. They should have made it clearer to him that he was the back-up choice all along - but I suspect this is how Hollywood works anyway. Moneymen playing talent off against each other until they can strike the best possible deal with the guy they REALLY want.

Even if his hands were tied ( which i think is true ), he could've at least spoken with Ewan after it happened and explained the whole situation, not left him for cold.

I think McGregor felt their friendship was the real deal and had nothing to do with Hollywood. You don't stop talking to a friend for years.
