oulbodyautopsy — 13 years ago(July 02, 2012 10:44 AM)I don't particularly take notice of directors to be honest (usually just films on a stand alone basis), but now there has been a few films that i've really enjoyed that i didn't realise he was actually the one behind a few of them.
Sunshine, The Beach, Slumdog Millionaire and 28 Days Later were all great. In particular Sunshine. I do agree with what has been written above, it could have been an all-time great sci-fi, but i was a bit disappointed in the ending as well.
Not seen Shallow Grave or 127 Hours yet which both sound interesting too. But i might have to have a watch of them now.

Thing I like about Boyle is his visual approach with films, it sometimes doesn't work, but I like the fact he is always experimental with his approach. I'm not sure whether I would consider him underrated or not, he seems to be able to hit the spotlight; but doesn't quite have the clout other directors would have in terms of keeping the spotlight and having the critics support his work. I certainly wouldn't consider Ridley Scott underrated at all, in fact, he is one of the biggest names in the directing business.

If anything, I think he's overrated. Of the movies that Danny Boyle directed, that I have seen, I can only say that I like "The Beach". The rest were mediocre at best. I thought "Slumdog Millionare" was one of the most overrated movies of all time, and "127 Hours" was just plain awful.

How can you even define underrated/overrated? Do you define this from the amount of awards or box office returns? Some of my favourite films have failed by both of these measures. I have, previously, seen movies that have succeeded by either classification that I absolutely detested (ie Crash, Argo & Avatar), however who am I to say that they were undeserving?
Myself, I have enjoyed many of Danny Boyle's movies and would say that he is one of very few filmmakers that I would watch just knowing that he was director and having no knowledge of the film itself.
If you have seen a movie that you really enjoyed or left an impact on you, fantastic, please don't let the lack of accolades or financial reward diminish this for you; don't rely on others to reinforce your feelings, this is not the way to measure something produced to entertain. -

I discovered him with Shallow Grave but it' with Trainspotting that I realized he directed 2 of my favorite films! These 2 films are PERFECT to me. I watched them 17 times maybe? With those two films I realized the importance of editing, music, chosen camera angles, stylizing, use of color, etc and mostly the significance of the director. I do have movie directors that are 'must watch' to me and Danny Boyle is one of them!

it's strange for me that he's praised for his worst which is Slumdog, and overlooked for many of his better films like Millions, Shallow Grave, The Beach, Sunshine. Well, at least two of his best: Trainspotting and 28 days later are getting the deserved recognition, lol.

I did no watch Slumdog yet.
I think that Sunshine is gaining some kind of cult classic. I read really good things about it in magazines, blogs and forums. Often qualified One of the best Sci-fi on the last 10 years and I do tend to agree! I loved 28 Days later. One of my favorite directors having a take on one of my favorite horror themes (and at a time with was not as over used as today) !!! At the end, when the jeep smash the 'barricade door' (you know what I mean!) and the image stop !! I was like OH MY GOD This is one of the best ending ever !!!!!!! then, there's the epilogue, which was okay !! -
