Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Frank Capra

My mom and I noticed that in "It's a Wonderful Life" there was a black bird like a Raven or a Crow. My mom also said that in all the films that Capra has directed he always has a Raven/Crow. He said that he liked having the bird. Is there a signifance to having the bird in his movies? Did he train the bird or what's the real reason?
    Thanks.

Can't answer any of your questions though I'm curious to know the answers. Just wanted to add he had a Raven in You Can't Take It With You named Jim. I remember watching that film with a girlfriend and she thought it was a clever joke (Jim Crow: IE Jim Crow Laws "separate but Equal treatment."), However I kind of think that wasn't the point at all. I think Its just a black bird named Jim.

I remember that in the documentary on
        It's a Wonderful Life
that came with the DVD, they mentioned that the bird was a raven named Jimmy that appeared somewhere in all of Capra's movies (at least for a given time period).
Ravens and crows are both very smart birds and apparently can make good pets. I would imagine that Capra probably liked having the bird on set. I would imagine that it wasn't so much a significant element of the plot as it was just something to look for, like Hitchcock's walk-on cameos.
