Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Frank Capra

    jerkyshaw — 20 years ago(February 13, 2006 08:32 PM)

This is a very simple question that is at the heart of all the discussions on this board. Is Frank Capra one of the greatest directors of all time? Too this question I would give a resounding YES! I would even venture to put him in the top 5! So do you think he's one of the greatest and how high would you rank him?

One of the unsung greats up there with Hitchcock & Welles in my opinion.

Yes, Frank Capra is not only one of the greatest directors ever, but also one of the greatest script writers. I understand that he co-authored
          Meet John Doe
with Robert Risken, based upon somebody else's treatise, but his filmography page here is not credited with this entry.

I don't know if I'd say he's THE best, and I don't know if he belongs in the top 5 or not, but yes, I think he was an amazing director, too often belittled by self-important film-snobs who'd rather leave a movie depressed than uplifted. Whereas some people see his movies as simple, naive, and "corny", I see them as well-made, well-acted, and giving stage to themes that we could all stand to see more of.
