Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Frank Capra

    thao — 19 years ago(February 02, 2007 09:19 PM)

I'm going through 12 Capra films now in a chronological order and the Walls of Jericho are quite prominent in two of them, The Strong Man and It Happened One Night. He must have liked that chapter in the Bible 🙂
Any other Capra films with The Walls of Jericho or any other repeated Biblical themes?

Well, I found this old discussion on
        Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
, which might interest you (Bible reference):

Thanks for the link DrMulholland. I have answered the post on the Mr. Smith Goes To Washington board. And talking about Mr. Smith There is an interesting comparison in the film with Smith being David fighting Goliath (another biblical reference).

David and Goliath are also in It's a Wonderful Life.
Now I have a theory. I think these two stories say everything there is to say about a Capra film. They are about how the small guy(s) win the big guy(s) against all odds. Isn't that what most Capra films are about?

Yes, it is in Wondeful life, in Smith, in Deeds, and in You can't take it with you.

Capra is quite interesting when it comes to Biblical references. They are quite prominent in almost all his films. Just to add to what has already been mentioned. The Lily of the field is often mentioned in "You Can't Take It with You" and it is about people who live like that. "Meet John Doe" has a Christ figure and deals with Christ's message. "Lost Horizon" has a Eden theme (even though the origin is from Buddhism). Shangri-La resembles very much the return to Eden at the End of time. And there is a reference to the Samson and Delilah story in Pocketful of Miracles, where the apples from Annie are likened to Samson's hair. No power with out the hair, no luck with out the apples.
