this has intrigued, and baffled me for more years than i want to admit.
in 'husbands' there is that scene towards the end when the 3 guys are in the hotel suite drinking champagne and singing and dancing with the 3 british women. the topic of 'the cigarette trick' comes up, and benny and peter begin to goad johnny on to do 'the cigarette trick'. "gus! do the cigarette trick!"
but unfortunately, that part of the scene is cut short. arrgh! and we never get to see the trick.
'the cigarette trick' is brought up again in 'love streams' when susan (diahnne abbott) and john are drinking champagne at the club, and he asks her if she wants to see his cigarette trick. and yet again, it isn't shown.
i believe there is one more time i've seen the cigarette trick mentioned, whether it be in one of his movies, or in a documentary on him, but i'm drawing a blank right now on that.
i would just like to know.
first of all, does anyone even know what the bloody hell i'm talking about?
but also, does anyone know what the cigarette trick actually is?
i'd be much appreciative..thank you

i guess it could be a possibility. i just looked the movie up, but i've never seen it. actually i've never even heard of it till you mentioned it.
if you could, could you tell me the reference to a cigarette trick in that movie?
i'd really appreciate it.

I went looking for a link to post, only to discover my memory was wrong, which is hilariously coincidental given the nature of the film (it's about memory and perception). It's actually a card trick, though I'm pretty sure at some point in the film the guy uses cigarettes in place of cards. Either way, you should see it. It's one-of-a-kind.

that IS pretty funny!
i was reading some of the comments about it on the 'Last Year at Marienbad' page, and it does indeed sound like a good movievery interesting plot.

i know about both of those scenes, and that is why my curiosity was peaked about the 'trick'.
he does indeed mention it in 'love streams', and in 'husbands' archie (peter falk) and harry (benny gazzara) egg him on to do the cigarette trick.
i just wish i knew what it was.
