I just completed a course on Cassavetes and his films. We watched all his films except for Big Trouble. My order now would have to be the following:
    Love Streams
    A Woman Under The Influence
    Husbands
    Opening Night
    Faces
    Shadows
    Killing of a Chinese Bookie
    Gloria
    Too Late Blues
    A Child Is Waiting

My favorite film of Cassavettes is Faces. I saw that first when I was 12. Followed by A Woman Under The Influence.

It's great to see how many people realise just how important Faces is/was, probably the greatest USA-ian film of all time.

          1. Faces
          2. A Woman Under The Influence
          3. The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (original cut)
          4. Opening Night
          5. Shadows
Putting a film at the bottom of the list is quite difficult, especially considering that Shadows is one of the best USA-ian films of the 50s.
            Truly brilliant film-maker.

Why not just say American instead of USA-ian? That sounds sorta wierd. I haven't seen HUSBANDS, TOO LATE BLUES, A CHILD IS WAITING and BIG TROUBLE.
            A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE
            MINNIE AND MOSKOWITZ
            LOVE STREAMS
THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE (love both cuts the same)
            OPENING NIGHT
            SHADOWS
            FACES

Because America is a continent and he's not from Brazil.

First of all, America is a country, North America is a continent. And second, why are you referring to yourself in the third person?

USA is a country, not America, that's a continent. You must be from there, hence your inability to understand the difference. Your country doesn't even have it's own name. How stupid would it sound if France was called the United Provinces of Europe?
How am i talking about myself in the third person?

USA is United States of America. The accepted term is American. The continent is North America. The country is called America. You're just being difficult to be difficult.

yeah so, moving back to the topic at hand
i love cassavetesdefinitely one of the most important american (no offense, but calling folks from the USA 'americans' is a convention that i won't even bother to challenge at the present moment) filmmakers in history
                          my top 5 personal favorites:

                          1. A Woman Under The Influenece (Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk are simply amazing)
                          2. Faces (indeed one of the most important films ever made)
                          3. Husbands (always surprised people don't like this morei think it's phenomenal for those reasons already listed)
                          4. Shadows (amateur-ish for sure, but it's the acorn that grew into the oak)
                          5. Gloria (yeah, that kid was no Brando but Gena kicks some serious ass in this one and i love her for it)
I'm afraid she's upped stumps and retired to the pavillion.

From earth-shatteringly brilliant to damn good stuff, in that order.

                                          1. Husbands
                                          2. A Woman Under the Influence
                                          3. Faces
                                          4. Love Streams
                                          5. Killing of a Chinese Bookie (long cut)
                                          6. Minnie and Moskowitz
                                          7. Opening Night
                                          8. Shadows
                                          9. Gloria
All but Gloria are 10/10s by the way. Gloria's probably an 8.
Cassavetes had the same quality as a director as he did as an actor when he was on-screen performing he had what can only be described as "it". You can't take your eyes off of him, and find yourself bored when he's not around. That's exactly how his filmmaking career was - cinema got boring when Cassavetes wasn't around.
Also some love should go out to SHE'S SO LOVELY. God only knows what Cassavetes would have done with this had he been able to helm it. It doesn't have hardly any of his directorial sensibilities, but it feels a little like how if those other 9 movies mentioned above were novels, SHE'S SO LOVELY is a nice little short story. I've got a lot of analogies today.
