those are two of my least favorite even so, they demonstrate what makes cassavetes so wonderful and so very, very interesting luckily, the first cassavetes i saw was 'a woman under the influence', which is THE cassavetes to see before you die. later i saw "FACES" which is parallel to 'a woman' in that it represents the cassavetes thing (human relations, warts and all) in all its glory. 'minnie and moskowitz' is a close third, and '2000husbands' is tied up for that honor. i haven't seen 'love streams' yet, although that could usurp everything else given what i've read about it..
basically love or what i've known of love, togetherness or what i've known of togetherness, people or what i've known of people, it all coalesces into a monument of emotion in a cassavetes film. if bergman represents the notion of spiritual, otherwordly transcendence in the cinema, cassavetes represents an entirely wordly means of doing the same.
drama in a dewdrop. i love this guy, his wife, and his creations
rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in.

Why do you give 'Faces' 9/10 and then 8/10 = Not a great FAN after all eh?

I've only seen The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, but I found it to be very impressive, unique and visionary. If that film is as good as most of h238is stuff then he's easily a first tier director.

To me his stuff was born out of the whole New York, newer, improvisational acting/jazz era of the 50's.
So just like how you can listen to the same jazz song improvised in many different ways and find something new in it, so to can you also constantly find several fresh new things each time you watch one of Cassavettes movies.
                          So I love em all.

happy to see that some of you have included 'husbands' on your lists.
                                    that's my favourite.
i have problems with a lot of 'his' movies. they make me feel uncomfortable, and i realize that is what he was going for, but i don't like that feeling when watching a movie.
and yet, when i watch 'husbands', i don't get that feeling. i love it for all the comedic moments, and for all the love between the 3 of them.
it's a wonderful interpretation of what men deal with in life.and i think the 3 of them displayed it better than in any movie i've seen.
john is sadly gone, and peter is sadly dealing with dementia and possibly alzheimers..and benny 'the great' is still out there receiving the jimmy stewart 'harvey' award'yay benny!!!
these 3 guys will always hold a special place in my heart
hi, my name is carleeni'm harmless.
