Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — John Cazale

I was watching the Godfather Part II and I had just watched the scene in the lake house where Micheal tells Fredo he doesn't consider him a friend or a brother. I remember thinking WOW this is one of the best acted scenes I've ever seen, Cazale is so brilliant he must have gotten an oscar nomination for this. But no. What a disgrace! The Academy seemed to have hated him for some reason.

Oh man, that is one of my all time favorite scenes. He did such a good job in that movie. The part where he says "I'm smart, not dumb like everyone says", almost make111cs me tear up lol. I just made a thread similar to this in "The Godfather part 2" forum thingy. Sorry, I didn't mean to steal your post, lol.

I find it pretty unbelievable that he didn't get a nomination for it I think it's easily one of the greatest supporting actor performances of all-time - along with De Niro - his vulnerability and nuance is so beautiful and extraordinarily moving to watch. How he's able to turn this incredibly weak, cowardly, sleazy buffoon into such a human, deeply layered characterization of this man that we end up feeling so much for is an amazing piece of acting.
Cazale was a brilliant actor, very much reminiscent of my all-time favorite actor, Montgomery Clift (and I saw Pacino say in an interview that he was also Cazale's acting hero) - it's a shame he only made five films and I wish very much that I had been around and able to see him on stage, but alas, I wasn't born 'til '89. I'm sure had he been able to make more than just five films he would have really churned out a legacy as one of the most respected actors of all-time, up there with Clift, Brando, De Niro, Pacino, etc.

I have one question. exactly how did Fredo betray Michael? did he let the hitmen in? did he open the curtains?
