Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Bob Dylan

    fartherdown747 — 14 years ago(July 22, 2011 12:08 AM)

Just reading some of his quotes
I consider myself a poet first and a musician second. I live like a poet and I'll die like a poet.
I think a poet is anybody who wouldn't call himself a poet.
You don't necessarily have to write to be a poet. Some people work in gas stations and they're poets. I don't call myself a poet because I don't like the word. I'm a trapeze artist.
I would really like to think of myself as a poet, but I just can't because of all the slobs who are called poets.
Make up your mind Bobby boy no one cares that much if you want to be thought of as a poet.
-Maybe it has something to do with the Carl Sandburg incident?
February 1964: Dylan and three friends drove south from New York to see some of the US heartland. He insisted they stop unannounced to see poetCarl Sandburgin North Carolina. To his lasting disappointment, Dylan left after some ten minutes when he sadly realized he couldn't get the venerable man of letters to take him seriously as a fellow poet.

I think these quotes are just examples of Dylan either bein mischievous with the press. Sometimes he says the words are more important than the music then in the next interview he will say the opposite.
I suspect if a reporter praised his lyrics he would say the words aren't important and vice versa if the interviewer tried to get him talking about his music.
These quotes also seem to be from the 60's so I suspect he wasn't entirely 'straight' during the interviews.
Dylan has also said he regards himself primarily as a song and dance man. Funny thing is he may have been fairly serious about that.

lol "wasn't entirely straight" that sure is a pretty way of saying it 😉
Yea I guess maybe your right because it seems he contradicts himself one quote after the next. You wouldn't happen to know anything about his motorcycle accident would you? You seem like a pretty big fan and all I know is he got in an accident and went into seclusion I was wondering what type of injury he received and how long did he go into seclusion? Did it really take him all that time to recover or did he become addicted to pain killers or something? thanks if you can help!

The motorcycle accident is still a bit of a mystery. Think what probably happened is it wasn't life-threatening but he took the opportunity to take some time off and relax. So his decision to stay out of the spotlight was probably nothing to do with injuries and more to do with him wanting to slow down a little.

True, that could be it. Plus in a way it kind of helped to add to his sort of rep. With people still wondering about him keeping him relevant all while being able to take time off and not having to work to keep his name constantly out there.

I assume the first quote is from when he was first coming up, trying to establish himself as an artist of significant weight. After he achieved that he seemed to want to shy away from it.
You can't really take quotes from different periods in a person's life and expect them not to be contradictory in many ways.

Yea I guess the quotes do span over a long period of time and maturity.
Do you know anymore about his meeting with Carl Sandburg. I wonder what Carl said to him and what Dylan replied. That would of been crazy to of been there lol.

I do believe a majori5b4ty of these quotes are from the mid-60s and were indeed his teasing, purposefully confusing and mocking the press while going through a large amount of press conferences and interviews with very serious journalists

Believe it or not, some people do care and I'm one of them. What I
                    don't
care about is your opinion on a man with more talent and success than you'll ever dream of having

Wow if you really care that much whether someone cares to be thought of as a poet or not than you really are pathetic and need to stop worshiping famous people as if they were some sort of godly figures. I wasn't bringing up this topic to insult him, or take it to anything other than a lighthearted conversation. I didn't even say I wasn't a fan of his, but as usual on here, you jump the gun and become defensive, you went on over-sensitive troll alert with
"What I don't care about is your opinion on a man with more talent and success than you'll ever dream of having"
^But thanks for obviously caring what I wrote since if you didn't you wouldn't of responded at all.

Depending on the journalist, Bob could be hot or cold with his answers.
