Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Bob Dylan

Can't wait to here this one, Nashville Skyline and New Morning are two underrated gems IMHO and it's nice to see that era getting some attention. Maybe we'll get a release from the religious years. I'd love to get an officially released show from his touring years of 79-81. The Rollingstone article says that there's more Bootleg releases on the way based around Blood On The Tracks and Blonde on Blonde, and the Basement Tapes, all obvious choices (and exciting ones for sure) but it's nice to get these less obvious choice installments as well. How fun it is to be a Dylan fan!!!

Well, I guess it can't be any worse than the original.

Cmon now Self Portrait has some good stuff on it too. Too harshly criticized IMHO.

Oh, for sure, there's the odd gem or two tucked away on it, it's worth having just for Copper Kettle and Days of 49 alone, but there's a lot of indifferent filler on it, too, as Dylan well knew. I've only rarely sat through the whole thing in one go. Sometimes on a slow and gentle Sunday morning, it fits the mood, but it's not a great album, and was never intended to be.
that said, I am genuinely intrigued by the Bootleg release, and will definitely give it a whirl. If they have stripped out some of the orchestration, and are giving us pared-down versions more in line with a Good As I Been/ World Gone Wrong sort of feel, I may even warm more to the material.
So whilst I am managing my expectations somewhat, nevertheless it was a very distinct phase of his career, and it's quite right for them to revisit it, and I am definitely curious to hear it.
And the New Morning alternate takes will be good to hear.

I just listened to it again and there's more on it that I like than dislike i think. I have to be in the mood for it for sure, but I like it. I'd add Gotta Travel On as a hidden gem too and it also contains the best Quinn The Eskimo IMHO. I enjoy the album for what it is. Then again, I never thought his Dylan album Columbia released as punishment for leaving them was all that bad either, for what it was that is.

I think Self Portrait is a strong contender for Dylan's best album. Naturally, then, I can't wait for this new release

Whoa hold on there a minute, I said it's better than a lot of people give it credit for, but it's in NO WAY a contender for one of his best. Let's not get carried away here.

No, but it's definitely one of the better and more complete additions to the Bootleg Series.

I haven't heard the new set, pretty good I take it?
I was referring to the original Self Portrait in my previous post.
Hopefully I'll be getting the new deluxe set very soon.

Yes, it's awesome! Really good material that gives new perspective to the much maligned early '70s era. The remastered SELF PORTRAIT (included in the deluxe version) is nothing special though.

Yeah I never really care about new remastered versions of studio albums.
But a cleaned up Isle Of Wight show does interest me How is the new version of that sounding?
$90 for this thing, I hope I'm not disappointed. I like a lot of that early 70s material ie New Morning, Nashville Skyline, parts of Self Portrait so I'm definitely going to get it.

It's a clean quality recording. I haven't heard the Hollow Horn bootleg but according to fans the ASP disc is a MAJOR improvement.

Well, had a couple of weeks to sit down and listen to this, and it's frankly brilliant. Alright, it's no surprise to anyone that Bob leaves half his best stuff on the cutting room floor, and it only emerges decades later, but this is far better than I was anticipating, and I've been really enjoying it. What it has, that Self Portrait doesn't, is a sense of fun and enjoyment. It's just really easy to listen to, which I couldn't say of the parent album.
Cracking version of Went To See The Gypsy to open - I've been listening to that song for a quarter of a century, and it's never made the slightest impression on me, and yet this version grabbed me instantly and I can't believe it's the same song (witness also, albeit on a much shorter timescale, Can't Wait - totally forgettable album version, absolutely rip-snorting Bootleg version).
Some lovely takes on old tunes, This Evening So Soon is a gem, and you can't go wrong with House Carpenter. Great to have Tattle O'Day, too.
Some more recent covers, too, Thirsty Boots is fabulous.
Oh, and Working on a Guru just makes me laugh out loud.
Love it. Self Portrait is a fairly joyless experience (albeit with occasional moments), with Dylan sounded bored, half-arsed and deliberately wrecking things at time. I can understand why he put it out, if I had people crawling on my roof, going through my bins and hassling my kids, I'd want to explode the 'spokesperson of a generation' legend as well. So I can see why he did it.
But Another Self Portrait is a lovely, warm record. So pleased this stuff has finally seen the light of day. A much better record any which way you look at it. Hurrah!

If it's even half as good as Another Self Portrait, I'll happily take it. I genuinely can't believe just how awesome ASP is, compared to its parent album(s). What a revelation. ASP is flat-out fantastic. Who would ever have thought it?!
