Did he get Raiders role thanks to R. Dreyfuss and '…Duddy Kravitz'?

In the early 70s he had a role in the Canadian film 'The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz' which starred Richard Dreyfuss. Dreyfuss was pretty much in every one of Elliot's scenes. This film came out during the filming of Jaws and the reviews in the NYT were so good that Robert Shaw would tease Dreyfuss about it. I wonder if Dreyfuss recommended Elliot to Speilberg during Jaws or maybe when Speilberg was casting or doing pre-production on Raiders.
