I adore Harvey's voice. You just can't blend in with vocals like his, and my favorite people are always the ones who stand out.

From what I understand, very early in his career he was in a play that required him to deliver a long monologue over the top of a gospel recording of "God Bless America" that was being played very loudly. Harvey, ever the dedicated professional, wanted every word of the monologue heard, and over the course of the season he did permanent damage to his voice, resulting in the iconic rasp that is now his trademark.

I've been wondering about his voice for years because I know he's sounded like that for a long time and wasn't sure if that was just a character voice he did (like Gilbert Gottfried), but can't talking like that constantly cause polyps or some other detrimental problems?

Yeah kind of like Tom Waits.
But I suspect large amounts of high alcoholic booze were involveded in his case.

I HATE his voice. Everytime I see a movie with him in it I say, "oh god, the guy with the annoying voice again."
