Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Harvey Fierstein

By Casting John Travolta, the makers of the musical version of Hairspray have spit upon the memory of Divine. Casting Harvey Fierstein would've made more sense proper because a) he played Edna on the stage, and b) it would've been more fitting for a gay person to play the role. This is a travesty.
Choose your signature quotes carefully. They could be misinterpreted (you moron).- drwho

I was shocked and dismayed to see Travolta in the role as well. I mean, I like Travolta, but he was just very wrong for that part. Plus, NO ONE can play the part like Divine! She was just AWESOME in that movie as Mrs. Turnblad.
I never thought of Mr. Fierstein for the role, but yes, he probably would have done 10 times better in the role than Travolta.
I would like to imagine though, that had Divine lived, perhaps she would have considered revising her role in the new film.

I have to disagree with this. As much as I like Firestein I think he was the worst possible choice for Edna, on the cast recording he just sounds exactly the same as he always does.

Well, you should feel better now that he's going to play Edna in Hairspray Live on NBC this December!
