Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Greta Garbo

    tseybert — 10 years ago(July 23, 2015 12:42 PM)

I love some of her sound films - like Grand Hotel, Ninotchka, Anna Christie, Queen Christina and especially Mata Hari - but I've only seen one of her silent films (Flesh and the Devil) and I didn't like it too much.
And I'm a pretty big fan of silent films! I love Chaplin, Lloyd, Keaton, Lon Chaney and stuff like Wings, Sunrise and Pandora's Box.
But I've avoided Garbo's silent films because Flesh and the Devil was a chore for me to sit through and her silent films just seem to be variations of the same theme.
In August, TCM is showing all Greta Garbo for a 24-hour period, and I thought maybe it was time to give silent Garbo another chance. It's been more than 20 years since I saw Flesh and the Devil, so maybe I just hadn't seen enough silent films to appreciate it way back then.
So can the Garbo fans help me out here? What's her best silent film? And which of them is most different from Flesh and the Devil?
    Thanks in advance!

My personal suggestion is just put any title for a try. I tried many, the torrent, temptress, the kiss, flesh and the devil, they're all terrible, the plots are like cheese with holes but covered with garbo magic, it gets somewhat magical somehow. Even the worst ones are worthwhile. I wish there would be more we don't have another Garbo.

        I DVRed
        Wild Orchids
but I haven't watched it yet. I'll probably watch it over the weekend.
I'm looking forward to it because it's been more than 20 years since I saw Garbo in a silent film.

          I loved
          Wild Orchids
          !
The time went by so quickly!
Mr. and Mrs. Sterling (Lewis Stone and Greta Garbo) travel to Java so Mr. Sterling can look at tea plantations. On the boat on the way over, they meet a wealthy degenerate butthole (played by Nils Asther) who starts stalking Garbo. He makes friends with Mr. Sterling so he can be close to Garbo so he can have plenty of opportunities to pester her and take advantage of her whenever possible.
His biggest ally in Mr. Sterling, who is a complete ding-dong, and he ignores Garbo's warnings that Nils Asther is a Grade-A douchenozzle.
I decided early on that Mr. Sterling deserved everything that might happen to him.
Along the way, we get Javanese sword dancing and Garbo in a native outfit that most viewers will appreciate more than stupid-ass Mr. Sterling did.
Also - the wackiest tiger hunt this side of
          Octopussy
          .

So glad you enjoy. I wish new generations discover her legacy.

Wish I had seen your post earlier. I would've have suggested that you DVR"A Woman of Affairs". She breaks your heart in one scene. Always has been my favorite Garbo silent. BTW, the setting is modern.

Thanks for making a late suggestion! I liked
                Wild Orchids
quite a bit so I'll keep my eyes open for the next time TCM shows
                A Woman of Affairs
                .

I've only ever seen Love, it was tedious like most silent films, but boy was she a dream. An absolute dream.

I think the Joyless Street is a great one. Though her hollywood silents seem quite weak in story, I always find any Garbo vehicle worth a try. I suggest Wild Orchid, The Kiss.
