Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Greta Garbo

No premieres, no autographs, no interviews, no nothing! It's like she hated what she did or having to work in this industry, like it was an obligation or something. If that was the case, she should have chosen to be a cashier.
    Super RUDE of her.

she had not made a picture in almost 50 years and died with millions.
she never did like acting. but it made her rich.

It's one big contradiction. She liked acting, but she did not want the attention or the fame. And when she shot scenes for her films she demanded no one else be on the set, just the director and the camera men. She created this veil of mystery around her, which only made people more eager to know things about her. I am not sure if she was aware 1908of this. She must have been very stubborn. I think it would have been wise to give a little in, instead of shutting completely. But that's Garbo for you.

Garbo was one complex person. It's best just to accept what she was rather than analyze it. She was capable of being wonderfully warm and considerate as well as selfish, aloof and thoughtless.

It is not rude to maximize your talent. All the other stuff that may come with it is often unexpected and unasked for Fame is a byproduct of acting, not its summit.

i think people quite enjoyed her reticence, it made her a woman of mystery. and if you enjoy seeing someone's films, why the need to pester them for autographs etc? why not just watch the films?
