Given Mel Torme's reputation for telling lies. His most infamous target was Judy Garland with his 1970 book 'The Other Side of the Rainbow.' It took twenty years to uncover Torme's deception. IT'S A LONG, LONG STORY.
But I digress.
I started wondering about other claims that may have been false. He dated Ava Gardner in the 1940s and told two different accounts on how he broke up with her. In one story he said that Ava smoked too much and he couldn't take it and broke it off. The other story is the one that appears in the biography by Lee Server in which Torme attended a movie premiere and lied to her about it [lying seems to have been a thing he liked to do and was bad at] and this led to HER dumping him. -

Mel Torme was such a loser. I don't think he and Ava even dated. The creep used to claim he dated other famous women but you'd never find his name in their biographies. Was he really Ava's type anyway? He was not good looking like her other lovers.
But then again she did marry Mickey Rooney!
