For me it's Lola Montez, the legendary dancer/courtesan. It was a role she was perfect for! They were uncannily alike in physical type, persona and magnetism. Montez (originally Eliza Gilbert), like Ava, was a tigress-like, dark-haired siren possessed of exotic and wild gypsy beauty, temperamental and independent nature, exuded potent erotic magnetism, a bombshell who was a force of nature and larger-than-life figure. Both dazzling, flamboyant women who captivated the public as well as great and legendary men of their time.
Montez has been portrayed several times on film, notably among them Yvonne De Carlo in 1948's "Black Bart" (a good Lola in appearance and attitude) and most well-known being 1955's "Lola Montes" with Martine Carol (a horrid Lola, looks and persona all wrongtoo icy and dull). Ava not portraying Lola was a huge missed opportunity in the latter film and would've been a splendid companion piece to "The Barefoot Contessa" wher5b4e her character, the Spanish dancer-actress Maria Vargas (while inspired by Rita Hayworth) in many respects was Lola-esque!

Great choice, Eurasaina. I think she would have made a great Cleopatra, had she been ten years younger, as Elizabeth Taylor was. I also would have loved to have seen her in The Pink Panther (Capucine) and The Graduate (Ann Bancroft). She was meant to be cast for both of the latter roles. I'm not saying the actresses who did play them weren't great, but I'm answering your question! I wish she could have worked with Hitchcock, even if it meant going blonde, which she did a few times, and not for a role. I wish she could have worked with Welles, too.
