I think Ava would have made a GREAT Scarlett.

I prefer Ava to Vivien as a personality, but I can't see it. Maybe I have seen the wrong movies with Ava so far, but I can not see her as Scarlett O'Hara. For me 2000she's lacking this certain arrogance Vivien had.
Let's talk about movies and stars of the classic cinema at www.forum.silverscreenshadows.com. -

You mean aside from the fact she was a tad young to play the part?
If it's Gone With the Wind you're talking about.
Never defend crap with: "It's just a movie"

Yes in 1939 Ava was what, 17 ? Too young to play Scarlett.Vivien was more mature and sophisticated. And she was already 26.
But as for her physical appearance, she ( Ava ) would have been perfect with her luscios black hair and green eyes. -

Well, Scarlett is sixteen at the beginning of the book.
And I think Ava could have been successfully "aged" later in the film.
But of course she wasn't in Hollywood at the time.
If she had been - and had undergone the training and "pruning" she underwent upon her arrival to Hollywood - I think she would have been a very serious contender all the more so because they wanted a relatively unknown face. -

Ava was too young at the time to play Scarlett, plus she did not have that snootiness Scarlett had. Vivien Leigh mastered that role and was perfect for it. I think Ava would have been as good as Liz Taylor in Cleopatra though. Ironically, she was too old for that one.

"Ava would have been great [as would Elizabeth Taylor] if GONE WITH THE WIND had been made in the 1950s."
Agreed!! Liz was good in Raintree County, which mirrored GWTW a bit.
