For me James Garner's greatest movie role was in Marlowe (1969) and was clearly where we first saw the seeds of Jim Rockford.

If you haven't already, you might want to check out his memoir,
The Garner Files
(co-written with Jon Winokur). Well done, shows him to be quite modest, good-humored, without being self-serving - he seems like a really nice person. Amazing - though not entirely uncommon - how someone with such a rough childhood could grow up to be so warm and kind, with so little gentle behavior modeled for himit almost makes you think people are innately good. (His mother died when he was very young and his father didn't protect him or remarry well until the father's last marriage.) I like James Garner's politics, both personal and global. I agree, a real class act. Too rare overall and I think especially rare in Hollywood.
Also, check out
Duel at Diablo
. I'm not even a fan of westerns, and it's one of my favorites. The first 10 minutes establish Garner's character (as principled and compassionate as Garner seemed) beautifully. Great score, too.
RIP, Mr. Garner. And
thank you

He's a favorite, so handsome
I did hear about his step-mother's abuse of him. People who abuse children are the lowest forms of life
Sally Field said he was the best kisser. I think she almost fainted

Garner punched his stepmother and almost choked her.
I think this led to his hatred of bullies. He described punching a few of them in his autobiography [including actor Anthony Franciosa].
And yes, Sally Field said Garner was the best kisser. -

This is an interesting interview.
He really was a wonderful actor. He's another who could do drama as well as comedy.
I loved Murphy's Romance.
