Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — James Garner

    MoneyMagnet — 11 years ago(August 22, 2014 07:16 PM)

It's been over a month since James Garner passed away, and I'm still sort of bummed. Probably my decision to rewatch The Rockford Files has something to do with it, but I don't really understand my reaction, because I was a kid during the Rockford Files and don't really remember it well, I do remember the Polaroid commercials and just remember him being a famous celebrity, I've seen a few of his older movies but DAMN! For some reason, his passing is making me feel really old and the world just feels colder. (Having Robin Williams die too recently, doesn't help either)
I know he had a long life, but when I heard the news, I just felt like I didn't want him to be gone. I guess there are some celebrities who, for whatever reason, are very much associated with your memories of your own past, even if you didn't follow their career closely.

Completely agree. I am in the same boat. Usually when a celebrity dies I think "that's a damn shame". Then move on with my daily routine. I really wasn't a big TV watcher as a kid, but Rockford Files was a show my Dad and I never missed. Reading his bio really brought home the fact that he was one of the good guys in Hollywood that was a loyal friend. Hollywood and loyalty are not two words that typically go hand in hand.

Yesterday I listened to a podcast that had an interview of him on it. Oh, it made me so sad that he is gone. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED him in the film Maverick.
I've owned Maverick since the release and it's just so good to watch anytime for a great funny film.
My goal is to watch all of Garner's films. GREAT actor and person. I see his statue all the time in Norman, Oklahoma.

MoneyMagnet, you MarloweSyn and I must be very close in age. I too share similar memories and the same feelings about Garner as you.

I'm right there with you on this. Now mourning the loss of Rod Taylor, another all-time favorite of mine from the same era as Jim G.
You said it so perfectly, " some celebrities, for whatever reason, are very much associated with your memories of your own past"
I would also add that it is a reminder of how fast time goes, for all of us. Even the "golden" ones, who almost don't seem mortal.

                      Agreed.
                      And yet
Thank you, God, for not taking him in his prime, like that other Oklahoman Will Rogers.
