Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Jennie Garth

Okay, so I know I'll probably catch a lot of flak for this and get the old "If you don't like Jennie Garth then why are you on her page?" thing
But I have to say, as I re-watch season 3 of Beverly Hills 90210 (watched the show religiously when I was 17 in 1990 and in the years after), I think Kelly Taylor was the ultimate ho for getting together with Dylan. Mind you, I wasn't a fan of Brenda either. She was unnecessarily testy/bitchy a lot. But she didn't date her best friend's boyfriend or recent ex-boyfriend and act like "What did I do? Why are you mad?"
I mean, what a freaking ho.
I'm not saying this is Jennie Garth's fault, but that Kelly Taylorwho can approve of such a thing? Back then when people argued who was more likableKelly or BrendaI mean, anyone who could paint Kelly as this wonderful person is justoff.
When I was younger (in my 20s), I thought my best friend's boyfriend was hot. For five years, I was basically single while my best friend had this hot boyfriend. I never even once considered getting together with him, made a point of keeping my distance.
Anyway, as a slight aside in the "Kelly vs. Brenda" argument, I think they were about equal in looks. I actually don't think either one was truly beautiful. Pretty, though. But still equal. They both had flaws.

I fully agree with you. I'm not sure if Jennie Garth is totally blameless for that storyline. Shannen was not popular with the cast or the producers, so it's very much possible that Jennie had some influence on how the love triange story was executed. I read in an interview that Shannen didn't agree with that storyline either.

It's well-known that is was Luke Perry who primarily lobbied for Dylan/Kelly.

"I never even once considered getting together with him, made a point of keeping my distance."
          That's some pretty serious conceit.
As if it was all up to you.
If your outside matched your inside, what makes you think he'd have wasted a "one-time" on you?

I think they had to do drama, came up with this, and succeeded as making it one of the most popular soapy stories ever. That's pretty much what they wanted and succeeded in doing.

I don't know how much or that was the actress's doing. I'm sure the good or bad rapport among cast members probably had a lot to do with Shannen's departure and the stories that eventually developed in the show.
As many people who were in their teens back then, I loved the show and I watched it up until season 6 or so, when it had -imho- jumped the shark long ago. And I never liked Kelly Taylor, but I hated her from the moment she betrayed Brenda. You just don't do something like that.
I do think Shannen was beautiful -perhaps in an unusual way- while Jennie Garth was attractive at best, her features are nothing special (again, IMHO) but she was made to look as if she was the ultimate in the looks department.
