Every time Halliwell opens her big gob she usually says something deludedly stupid. Calling Margaret Thatcher "the original Spice Girl" was especially dumb, as was comparing Girl Power to Nelson Mandela's struggle against apartheid . She's just a failed aerobics teacher from Watford who got very lucky, and should stop pretending to be something she's not

Have to agree to disagree, then. The Margaret Thatcher quote was great. The girls were asked whom they thought the original Spice Girl was. Emma said her mum. Geri thought that Thatcher represented what "girl power" was all about. It was no comparison between apartheid and pop music; the "girl power" slogan means infinitely more. Geri and the other four should all be extremely proud of and happy with who they are and everything they've earned.

It was a phrase first coined by girlgroup duo Shampoo that Halliwell stole for The Spice Girls. So what was "Girl Power?" A girl's right to dress like a skank? That whole "all girls together" and "friendship never ends" stuff was all a steaming pile of beep - they were ultmately a bunch of talentless bimbos only out for themselves. Then Halliwell selfishly walks out like a deluded prima donna because she wasn't getting her own way every time for a rubbish solo career. Then they all reunite years later solely for the money. Well, "Girl Power"'s about lots and lots of thingsat the risky of sounding corny, it's female strength and solidarity and following one's dreams and all of that truly important stuff. Means a lot to people. Fortunately it's not a trademarked slogan. They were simply a great representation of all those ideas which the phrase suggests. Anyway, clearly, as one of the long-time Spice fans, I have a completely different view of the band and the girls' motivations and talents. Having followed them closely from the beginning, I came to understand that they weren't just your typical bandmates, but had become real friends, to the point of being sisters. Now, everybody's free to be or not be a fan of whomever they please, and why should I really try to change somebody else's mind? Why should I care? I just wanted to provide a bit of defense when I saw that title, since Geri was always my favorite (and I love her first solo album.)

They all became real friends?! Where are you getting your sources from? Mel B and Halliwell famously hated each other's guts! Why do you think Ginger walked out for a solo career of rubbish music, yoga dvd's and embarrasing cameos in Sex And The City?

As I said, I've been closely following them since they first became known at all, so the answer there would be every book that was written about them (including the one they wrote themselves), every documentary film, interview, behind-the-scenes featurebasically everything written or spoken about them that I've ever seen or heard, taken together, demonstrated that they weren't just playing up some illusion. I've no doubt that they had arguments and disagreements; who doesn't? But the notion that any of them actually hated each other is something that I've heard onlyand very rarelyas a rumor, and never seen anything to confirm. Geri had her own personal reasons for having had enough at the time she left, and no one was happy about it (upset as we fans were, we had to respect her personal decisions.) She was apparently having some differences with Mel B around that time, but they weren't the primary reason for her departure, and it probably wasn't even that huge of a deal; those two were known to be the bossiest of the girls, so it was only natural to expect them to clash at times. I know all about that sort of thing from personal experience!

They all still fancy themselves as solo performers still desperate for success whilst possessing no talent at anything other than shameless self-promotion. The most famous Spice Girl (not Halliwell) only continues to stay in the spotlight from marrying a famous footballer and having babies by him.
So does that count as Girl Power?? -

Once again, we're just in total disagreement. It's not really possible to prove anything regarding their relationships unless we got to know them personally for a while, but their talents are a subjective matter of personal opinion.
True, few things they've produced as solo artists can even compare with their actual Spice Girls music, and yes, we haven't seen much of them lately save for Victoria's publicized family news and Mel B doing some relatively minor stuff on TV. Just the same, many of us old-time fans still love and respect all of them, and yep, the "girl power" concept they embodied so well will stick with us forever -

Your blind allegiance to the Spice Girl brand is something else, moderndaydeliah. 5 talentless girls who couldn't carry a tune by themselves invented as a group by men trying to cater for men by making them all to dress as different male sexual fantasies. So that's what Girl Power was really all about..

LOOK, as I've said, have whatever opinions you like! It's a free world. Opinions about musical artists are hardly worthy of debate because that's all they are; opinions. You want to change the mind of someone who's been a fan for so long? My "fanship" of the Spice Girls is anything but "blind allegiance!" (?!) Or you'd have to say the same thing about the millions of other people who love(d) them and 111cagree with meI've known plenty of those, but scant few who share your strong negative feelings about the group. shrug Again, it's fine; I don't care. 'Talent' is often perceived very subjectively. I like all of their voices solo and ensemble (always found Mel C, Geri, and Emma to be the strongest singers.) They're also very admirable songwriters.
Butmale. Sexual. Fantasies. Okay, I guess you could see it that way (or just as, ya know, their various personalities/traits.) Still I find that really amusing, thanks!
