out of pure love?
the fact that they didn't believe in divorce?
they had an agreement?
I mean BOB was notorious for bedding starlets, having girls on the side
and being a ladies man, his wife must of known about his skirt chasing.
sure a lot of the boys in those days were notorious ladies men,
but many of them got divorced for it.
but Bob's wife never left him.
why? -

I'm not sure if religion played a part. Hope had already been married to Grace Troxell.
Dolores had been singing at the Club Richman. George Murphy and his wife invited Bob Hope to come along and see her.
According to George Murphy, Hope had met Dolores and couldn't stop thinking about her. Thirty or so years later, Dolores sent Murphy a fine contribution to his campaign [Murphy was up against Pierre Salinger for the Senate] along with a note of thanks for introducing her to Bob.
That shows there was a great love in the relationship. Maybe Dolores "understood" her husband. -

But being a Catholic may have been an important reason for Dolores Hope to keep on working at the marriage after a lot of other women would have given up.
Whatever the reasons, it seems to have been a successful marriage. -

I don't think the Catholic Church, at that time, really had a problem with divorce. A divorce in a family wasn't greeted with cheers, but it was accepted. Re-marriage was where the problems started.

Give me a break. Virtually NO male star, then or now - or even female
star, for that matter - is 100 percent faithful to his/her spouse.
Even Meryl Streep - who's been married for 30-plus years- has dallied
on the side (most notably with Jack Nicholson).
Welcome to show business. In this regard, Bob Hope isn't unique. -

I would say that Gregory Peck was faithful to Veronique and that Jimmy Stewart was faithful to his wife.
Bob Hope's womanizing was in another league. Even Dorothy Lamour spoke at great length about this aspect of both Bob and Bing late in her life. -

You are wrong - Stewart wasn't faithful his entire marriage. And while
some men (and women) stars were/are worse than others, infidelity is the
norm in Hollywood.
I maintain that Hope and Crosby were not unique. -

Anyone who says that about James Stewart or Gregory Peck clearly doesn't know what they are talking about. Peck had affairs during his first marriage, but nothing suggests he did the same thing with his second wife.
As for Stewart, every biography- and there have been a few bad ones- have gone out of their way to show Stewart was a loyal husband. To make a statement like this without evidence is a trademark of this particular poster. Even worse is to lump all these actors in the same group.
Whatever happened between Hope and Dolores they made it work. It appears that Hope was thought of very highly by his wife, children and his peers. -

done to the Judy Garland board to know what a freak you are.
And, no, Stewart was not a hundred percent faithful during his marriage.
Come in out of the rain and stop confusing his "golly-gee-whiz"
characters with the actor himself.
And I did not lump everyone together. I said most stars are not
faithful, then or now. To what degree, has nothing whatsoever to
do with my point.

You have piqued my interest. I have read biographies of both actors, but nothing I have read indicates that they weren't faithful husbands.5b4
I know James Stewart was a real womaniser in his early years but I have read nothing to indicate anything but his devotion to Gloria after their marriage. Same with the success of Gregory Peck's second marriage to his wife, Veronique.
I will be fascinated to read some books or articles which indicate the contrary. Could you please make some suggestions? Thanks -

It wasn't the divorce, it was the remarriage. The Church understood that there were reasons in life that peopl5b4e must part: domestic violence for example. The reasoning was that God doesn't want people to put their lives in danger. However, remarriage was a no-no. In the eyes of God, you are still married to your first spouse forever. This is provided you were married in the church the first time, of course.

Boy, religion sure is a joke. God sure made up a bunch of crazy rules. But the best thing he did was convince others that he actually exists. At least we know Bob Hope existed.
