But, you know what's really funny AND corny? And pathetic?
Users who read maybe the first two lines of a post, then scribble off a hateful, uninformed reply, but aren't posessed of the intelligence to use CAPITALIZATION or punctuation where it is called for.

(stacker62399) Good post. I think we're talking taste. Bob is from a time in entertainment that dialogue was king. The witty use of words. Sometimes delivered in a physical manner. Today the focus has shifted to visual. Quick visual stimulation. Take (David Letterman) throwing things off a 10 story building. Or (Will Ferrell) running naked down the street. Trying to go back to a time of funny lines could seem rather slow.
Bob started out in radio and was very successful. He carried his style of humor over into his movies and his stage act. I find him to be great! That's only my view. But be open minded. Try to sit thru one of his old movies. Remember to keep in mind the type of comedy this is. I suggest you watch "Son Of Paleface". Watch the whole thing and see if it grows on you. I find it's always good to attempt to expand one's taste. Finally Why do some hate him? He was unashamed about his politics. That may be part of it. It's a hot button for everyone. Some take it personally.

Disagree. Letterman was and remains a nimble VERBAL comic. He's very good.
Can't hold a candle to Hope, however. (Who can?)

I agree. David is great. I watched him that very first night when he took over for Tom Snyder. He was at the top of his game back then. After he moved to CBS he lost a little.
My point about stunts is simple. It seems to be the easy way today for a laugh. The sunt drives the humer not the actor.

                Hello stacker62399,
Everybody I know loves Bob Hope including myself.
My late Grandfather was in WWII and Korea and met Bob once and said wonderful things about Bob.
It's hard to know about celebrities for sure. Most biographies are a mixed bag because you get different opinions from different people who knew them because we all have different personalities.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth.

I remember a very unflattering story that was told to me by a guy in my dorm at college. I wad been talking to someone in the hallway about how funny Bob Hope was in a movie I had just seen. This other guy walked up and said he had a first hand experience about "Mr. Hope" at an awards show. This guy had been a seat filler, and was waiting for the person to return. An elderly lady with a cane(80's ?)walked down the aisle, spotted Mr. Hope in the same row he was sitting in, and politely asked Mr. Hope for his autograph. He retorted, "Get that woman out of here!" This guy had a high opinion of Mr. Hope until that incident. After, more than 30 years, I still remember being told this story as if it were yesterday. I've told it to other people, but they dismiss it, saying that Bob Hope couldn't possibly have said that to her. Really? I'm not so sure.

                    Hello marklwicksted,
Well who knows for sure but again in that story we don't know all the facts.
It could be that the woman had done something to Bob.
                    A sort of harrasment possibly.
We'll never know for sure about all the stories that surround the stars.
But ya know the celebrities are held up to a brighter light
than the rest of us so I usually give them the benefit of the doubt
depending on whether they appear to have a fairly nice character overall.
Well, that's my two cents worth.

(marklwicksted) Do you really think he would say that to a little old lady with a huge crowd around around him? Come on.

gee lefty, if all those are the reasons to revile Hope then you have to be the most hated man on earth! Compared to you, he's a candidate for sainthood.

Hope is reviled because he was a staunch Republican who actively supported Eisenhower, Nixon and Reagan, didn't do anything useful with his money, and wore a hairpiece
Oh I get it if one supports a major political party and wears a toupee, then that person is hated. OK, putting aside his trips to visit troops for 50 years and using the same standard then you have to be the most hated person around, willie. You supported Kerry, are anti-Semitic, inform on everyone in sight, spread lies about people after they are dead and buried, and have no respect for anyone or anything.

I became interested in old movies and vaudeville as a teenager. Somebody once told I was born about 50 years too late. I read Arthur Marx's book on Bob Hope and other than knowing he was Groucho's son, I didn't realize that Marx had once worked for Hope as a scriptwriter. In answer to the blogger who said Arthur never commented on his own father's shortcoming, I beg to differ. He wrote a book in the Fifties which has comments by Groucho in reference to what he said. Arthur said that Groucho's sense of humor was sometimes hard to take even in teasing. He did come off as a little cranky and even hypercondriac when he was sick. That's how he got his nickname "Groucho." His real name of course is Arthur. Getting back to Hope, Arthur Marx mentions that when Bob brought his autobiography, Groucho was also bringing one out. They mutually agree to comment favorably on each other's book on their TV shows. Groucho took time off from his quiz show to display the book to the audience. However, when it was Bob's turn, he was supposed to say to someone, "Have you read Groucho's book," but instead made a reference to his own. It sounds petty, but still, a deal's a deal. Yes, Hope did make tours to US soldiers in WWII, but he was not the only one. That was a common practice. It was just that after the war, he kept on doing it as well as putting on TV shows that were obviously aimed at young audiences, even though he represented the Old Guard. While he may not have used crude humor on his TV show,I have heard people like Phyllis Diller say that he does black dialect jokes and gay jokes at parties, affecting a lisp. That was funny at one time, but we have all grown up now. Like Bing Crosby, whose personal life got leaked out over the years, it is better to remember Hope as he was years ago, and not what he eventually became.

Harpo's real name was Arthur (he changed it from Adolph), Groucho was Julius. Groucho used to carry his money in a "grouch bag" (a bag hung around his neck)when he was young.
If your name was Julius wouldn't you prefer to be called something else?

Maybe it was a joke and he gave her the autograph but somebody only heard half of the story.
If he gave her the autograph, then "Get her out of here" is very funny. If he didn't give her the autograph, he's an ass.
