Rock Hudson was desperately trying to get treatment for AIDS in France in 1985. Much of that story has been told, but one part hasnt: After a simple plea came in for White House help to get Hudson transferred to another hospital, First Lady Nancy Reagan turned down the request.

So, you're conveying that Nancy didn't like homosexuals? Would that be so uncommon?
The Reagans were good friends with Rock Hudson. He stayed with them at the White House shortly after his 1981 heart surgery.
Who knows the whole story of Nancy denying him help when he was dying, but it is wise to take these stories with a dose of salt.
For instance, the President called Hudson at the hospital where he was being treated in France from his own hospital room after colon surgery. Sounds like something a real friend would do, no?

I am no fan of nor apologist for "Saint Reagan" and his scary bride, but I did find this article an interesting counterpoint to the generally accepted narrative.

And another quote from the article:
Weinberg recommended to Nancy Reagan that the White House refer the matter to the U.S. Embassy in France, because,
as he told BuzzFeed News, This is probably not the [last] time were going to get a request like this and we want to be fair and not do anything that would appear to favor personal friends.
The Reagans were very conscious of not making exceptions for people just because they were friends of theirs or celebrities or things of that kind. That wasnt they werent about that. They were about treating everybody the same, he told BuzzFeed News.
He told BuzzFeed News that he couldnt recall precisely what the former first lady said, but he did remember that she agreed with his recommendation, saying that they had to be fair in terms of treating Hudson the same as anyone else. Weinberg noted that when the White House begins making calls on something then things happen.
The view was, Well, were so sorry and she was, they were both very sorry for Rocks condition and felt for him and all the people but it just wasnt something that the White House felt that they could do something different for him than they would do for anybody else, Weinberg said.

The Reagans were as-holes. We know this. Ronald was a boldface liar and a traitor to his country.

I don't know if Nancy ever turned down Hudson's pleas for help. Could be true, could be a myth.
Reagan's daughter said that her father's response to AIDS was not a good one. She said there is no way around that fact.
That being said, she defended him against charges of homophobia. Reagan was friends with Rock Hudson. Reagan knew Hudson was gay and accepted it. Reagan was also close friends with William Haines and his partner Jimmy Sheilds.
No, I'm not a fan of Reagan. I'm not for or against him. I don't think you should be a fan of politicians. They shouldn't be elevated to idol status.
