From what I heard on the grapevine, Marilyn was truly in love with Rock and he actually considered marrying her, but only if she would accept his need for men too. She refused but they remained buddies.

Yup, that exactly what happened. He was honest with her, and told her he was gay and they remained friends.

Marilyn Maxwell first met Hudson in 1949 and there was an instant rapport, but she was about to marry her second husband. She was married to her third husband, Jerry Davis, when she met Hudson again. When they met again, Hudson had gone from bit player to one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.
Jerry Davis remembered that he would arrive home to find "this handsome, six-foot whatever man who was absolutely in tune with my wife. I felt a little like Woody Allen- 'Hi, honey, I'm home…'" While Davis was aware of Hudson's homosexuality he was compelled to ask his wife about her closeness with Hudson. Maxwell would get defensive and say "Are you paranoid? Do you actually think this man has any interest in me?"
When Maxwell and Davis separated, Dorothy Kilgallen told readers that Maxwell's estranged husband has been telling his friends that he expects Marilyn to waltz down the aisle with Rock Hudson as soon as she gets the divorce. They divorced in 1960. By the time of the divorce, Hudson's relationship with Maxwell had intensified. Maxwell's secretary, Jean Greenberg said "She said he always told her he loved her, but wasn't in love with her." Greenberg also said she knew they were having an affair.
Maxwell's son said that they did love each other but being with a woman wasn't part of his persuasion and that they talked about marriage but his mother couldn't deal with "the boys running around."
They remained friends until her death, but I am not sure how long the affair lasted. Hudson escorted Maxwell to a dinner for John F. Kennedy in March 1962 and the press were still asking if she was going to marry him. Maxwell denied there was a romance at this stage.
Sometimes their closeness would turn clingy. Hudson's secretary, Lois Rupert, recalled that Maxwell would often call asking "Where is he?" She never said "Hello" or "This is Max." Rupert always knew where Hudson was and was always able to calm her down.
Marilyn Maxwell fell on hard times and Hudson supported her financially. She owed him money and he just forgave the debt. When she died of a heart attack at the age of 49 in 1972 it was Hudson who went over and took her son home with him for a few days.
Some people still think Hudson was bisexual. Mamie Van Doren claims to have had an affair with him as does Sophia Loren. Truth appears to be that he was a homosexual who had the occasional fling with women. He does not appear to have had a female companion in his life after the early 60s.
He was engaged to Vera-Ellen. Hudson's cousin remembers that they they seemed like a couple and they did tell him about the engagement.
Then there is the matter of his secret child. Hudson supposedly had a quickie with the mother of a school friend. There had always been rumors about him fathering a boy and then later this included being the father of two girls [for which there is no evidence so far]. However, the story does get murky as the identity of the mother is based on speculation. Some recall that she was actually someone a young Roy Fitzgerald had gone to school with.
In 2014, Susan Dent came forward and claimed she was the daughter of Rock Hudson. Apparently her DNA matched with several of his relatives. The case continues.

Interesting! I read his ex-wife's book
From what she said, it was apparent that he was more sexually interested in men
With her the sex act was over quickly. He was very hot; I doubt if many could resist him

Mark Griffin's biography on Hudson gives us reason to assume that Phyllis wasn't entirely truthful and was actually in on the deception. Some people [Robert Stack, George Nader] thought the relationship was genuine. Maybe it was……in the beginning.

It was my impression that it was a cover, although he genuinely had affection for her
Phyllis gave the impression that they were in love, but she found out that Rock wasn't the marrying kind iirc

Yes it was a cover by both of them. She was a lesbian. Phyllis enjoyed the Hollywood lifestyle but didn't like Hudson sleeping with other men [although she didn't apply the rules to herself with women]. There probably was a time when they cared about each other. Both Robert Stack and George Nader were convinced it was a real marriage.
                Anyway, a more fun topic is reading about Mamie Van Doren's encounter with Hudson. According to her, he got a bit overexcited one night at the home of her parents LOL. This is part of what she said happened;

When the evening was over, Rock took me home to my parents’ little ranch house. We sat in the car talking for a while, then went inside for coffee. My parents were asleep, and we tiptoed into the kitchen. I put the coffee on and went to the cupboard to get cups and saucers. When I reached up, I felt Rock’s hands on my bare shoulders. He gently turned me and kissed me on the mouth. Surprise, surprise! It was a deep and searching kiss. He pressed his body against me and I could feel his erection. This was certainly not what I expected, but it was far from unwelcome!
We necked, panting heavily, and sank to the kitchen floor. I helped Rock unzip his fly, only to discover that it was no pebble he was hiding in there. Zowie! Rock was sporting a boulder! He rolled on top of me, but found himself engulfed in a cloud of crinoline. “Jesus,” he muttered, trying to push some of the petticoats aside.
Every time I moved my back against the cold linoleum, the beads popped off my dress and rolled across the floor. The sound of rolling beads was punctuated by the plunk-plop of the coffee percolator and our muffled voices giving directions.
                “Wait…oh…”
                “I … just let me…”
                “No…not there…”
I tried to guide him inside me but couldn’t reach him through the forest of underskirts. We slid on Mother’s waxed linoleum, struggling for traction and handholds.
                “Mamie…I’m…ah-umph, ah-umphin…”
                “What did you say?”
Rock let out a long sigh and his weight collapsed on top of me. “I said, I’m coming,” he groaned softly.
We got up and repaired the damage as best we could. It’s hard to wipe anything off of crinolines.
We had coffee and made a date for lunch the next day on the set of the movie Rock was shooting called Gun Fury. As he was leaving, Rock gave me a sheepish look. “I hope I didn’t ruin your dress.”
“No, no. It’s the studio’s dress anyway. They’re probably used to this sort of thing.”
Before I left for the studio the next day, my mother let me have it about the night before.
“The throw rug was pushed into the corner and the coffee pot was on all night. It’s a wonder it didn’t burn up.”
                “Sorry.”
“And what’s the studio going to say about your dress?”
I studied my orange juice intently.
                “What about it?”
“The beads, Jo. It must not have a bead left on it. When I came out into the kitchen this morning to fix your father’s breakfast, I nearly fell and broke my neck on all those little beads rolling round on the floor.”
I took the dress back to the Wardrobe Department and hurried out before they could look at it. For all I know it’s still hanging there in some dusty corner, un-dry cleaned forty-plus years later, mute and crusty testimony to Rock Hudson’s at least occasional bisexuality.

Whew! That was kind of a turn on to read for some reason. It sucks that she wasn't satisfied by that, but the overwhelming "feeling" is so powerful sometimes.
                Here's the whole thing.

Thank you! I had never heard that about Phyllis and the Mamie Van Doran story is golden!
My mother knew one of her husbands, Ray Anthony, who is 100 now! Mamie is 91 💙

Oh yes, Mamie is still living. She looked pretty hot as an older woman as well. I remember she either wrote a book or a column about the size of men's um members.
I think she and Hudson should have made a movie together. I also think Hudson and Maxwell should have done one as well.
