      Response to opening post
Maybe you could tell he was gay from that scene but Rock and Doris had amazing onscreen chemistry one might conclude from that that he was straight.
In other words, you may think you know, based on a scene or a gesture or any number of clues, that someone is gay or straightbut you might be incorrect.

To the OP, I don't think a thought like that is being homophobic. Lets face it, there was a time before homosexuality became more commonly known. When I was still a kid is when they had the first homosexual character on tv, Billy Crystal in the sitcom 'Soap' and it was done in a way that people could digest for the times, late 70s. As homosexuality became more understood and more common, things did get better and will get better for a lot of people.
I saw 'pretty maids' and there was a lot of sex in that movie, which is another thing that was edgy for the times. It is weird that you picked that up with everything that went on in that movie. From what I understand, Rock Hudson was a genuinely nice man and he became friends with the female actors that were in movies or tv shows with him and they had good chemistry with him and I do think that it may have helped him. It was a shock to find out he was homosexual, and it was to the public. I didn't care, but there were some bad jokes when he died that I didn't think were funny.
I remember when I was like 3-years-old and going to Universal Studios and for those who have never been there (this was in California by the way) they have actual movie scenes from popular movies. Airport had come out, which he was in, and I was 'picked' to do a part in the 'Airport' scene. Even though I do not really remember this, he apparently was there that day and while we were doing the scene, I apparently was doing the sorts of things that 3-year-olds do and he came into the scene, thought it was cute, and picked me up. I am told that EVERY woman there like to have passed out. I guess it was true because my family has pictures of it and there we are, just me and Rock Hudson, with a big room of screaming women because it was Rock Hudson. And, I don't remember a bit of it. Go figure.

And, herein lies the problem. Why can't two people of ANY gender, sexual orientation, race, culture, religion, creed or shoe size be within a foot of another person without people speculating about their sex lives? It's beyond ridiculous. We are supposed to be CIVILIZED people but let the Nosy Nellies tell it, anybody on the same side of a sidewalk at the same time is somehow engaged in some hot love affair.

are you that naive? Because human beings speculate about things. Nobody said it was right or wrong, but a reality. Especially with sex, since homophobia is alive and rampant as it ever was; we just like to think it's not. It's not about being being "CIVILIZED" (unless harmful intent is involved))
Nope. I'm not nave. Two questions for you:

                  1. Can you give me ANY example of people "speculating" on what is going on with people they don't know, have never met and aren't associated with that is NOT harmful?
                  2. Can you provide ANY example of people "speculating" on what is going on with people they DO know, have met and are associated with that is NOT harmful?

I don't ask questions with the preconceived idea of what the respondent SHOULD say so there is nothing, in particular, I wanted to hear.
My point still stands and that "speculating" about other people's private lives is, more often than not, harmful, pointless and mean-spirited. You can rationalize that however you need to. It doesn't change the fact that "speculating" has harmed quite a few people since the dawn of mankind.

                          Have you NEVER met
*someone who hides/lies about their sexual orientation for fear of rejection, ridicule, termination or even bodily harm?
*someone that has "figuratively" been stoned in Central Square on the idea that she has been with a man not her husband?
*someone that hides their crucifix or Star of David for fear of being unfairly judged?
*someone that hides her/his bruises and lies about any signs of physical abuse because being honest and asking for help will usually lead to rejection?
*someone that hides the fact that she has been sexual molested or assaulted because rape victims are the only victims of crimes that have to prove they did nothing to CAUSE it. (Go visit Bill Cosby's page and look at all the apologists. That many women would NOT risk their future ability to work in Hollywood over a lie. And, if X number of women are basically saying the same thing and still getting raked over the coals, what do you think happens when a predator isn't world famous, filthy rich and preys on even younger women (and men)?
If you don't see or understand why "speculating" about someone else's life can be very harmful, then it might help for you to take some psychology classes, volunteer on a crisis line, help run a suicide survivor support group or otherwise engage with society in a way to come to understand that "speculating" is anything but harmless chit-chat.
