Yes i agree with you it is and always will be a great sadness to have followed an actor like Jim in drama or in his comedies if he would have lived and pursued his career and in his late 40's to his 50's it would have been a honor to watch him grow older in film and tv and during the 80's watch him be with his son in film as well The Green Berets 1968 good supporting performance.

Yes, it would have been nice, as they both did comedy so well, particularly him. However, Hedda Hopper was the only person to report a title and a 5th movie coming out. Prentiss and Hutton said all along they didn't want to do another one. Hopper's reputation is bad.

I have always had a crush on Jim Hutton. I was envious of Paula Prentis playing against him.It makes me sad that he is gone..

Thanx , I would like to say that after the tv show Ellery Queen left the air thats when Mr Hutton's career went south around 75ish.

Yes, to some extent his career went south, but he had few phone calls asking for him, because the man was in his early 40s and still had a baby face, and he was still being typecast as a goofball or comedic absent-minded person. He did do TV pilots until the year of his death, and he has a Disney film in there, too, that aired two or three weeks before he died. A real shame to die so young. I miss him, too. Very underrated actor. Oh, and a lot of the actors in Green Berets had their careers go south, for political reasons.

For some reason, I seem to remember that Jim Hutton killed himself. Does anyone else remember it that way?

Nope. It has been pretty well documented that he died of cancer. As to what type, I have heard lymphoma, and it is generally listed as liver cancer on most movie sites. But I remember reading that it was only like eight weeks between diagnosis and death, so it was a very swiftly progressing type, anyway
                          I
                          had
a life, but my job ate it.

He was so great! it's a pity many people don't know him anymore!
Have you seen "Secret Window"? here there's his son, Tim and a magazine (very important for the main character): "Ellery Queen's mystery magazine" or something like that!

He was one of the hardest working actors out there. He did television spots in the 60s, long before he turned completely to tv in the 70s. Also, he did theater performances. He was not just a film person.

You may be referring to one of the episodes of Nero Wolfe where there is an "Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine" on the desk.

The comment by rajimom is correct. Liver cancer has tumors on the liver. And yes, he first went to the doctor 8 weeks before he died. Apparently, there was a misdiagnosis at first, but I'm trying to verify the details on that.

This is addressed to anyone out there who might be able to help me.
Many years ago in l958 or l959 (I can't remember which year, exactly), I was a very young enlisted man in the U.S. Army participating in field maneuvers in Germany. Several of us in my outfit were "loaned" out to an American television production company on location near where we were encamped. Our jobs were to serve as extras during the shooting of a U.S. television show called "Citizen Soldier." At least that's what I remember the name to be. For this one particular segment in which we were participatingit was entitled "Big Slim"Jim Hutton was the lead actor. He was roughly four years older than me and I had never heard of him before. All I knew was that he was some kind of actor. During the course of the two-day shoot, I was personally involved in a number of scenes. One moment, I wore a German soldier's uniform and charged down a hill. In the following scene, I changed into a GI's outfit and actually ended up alongside Jim, actually shooting at myself. In another scene, I was an M.P. directing traffic at an intersection. But the scene I remember best is the one in which I was a wounded, unconscious GI laying on a table in an old burned out church. The lead character, Jim, aka "Big Slim", came rushing into the burning building and heroically swooped me off an operating table, thus saving my life. It took several takes before we got it right. On take one, Jim's job was to avoid falling timbers, fight through the smoke and get me out the door. Unfortunately, he cracked my "unconcious" head on the door frame and I cursed out loud. "Cut," shouted the director. And we set it all up again. The second time, he dropped me when stepping over a timber. Jim apologized profusely and during the next hour or so, I got to know him somewhat and liked him. We had a lot of laughs through it all.
I remained in the Army for another year and never saw the TV show. Indeed, I'm not sure the series ever aired. If it did, I'd sure like to have a copy of that segment in particular. Is anyone aware of it? Can anyone direct me to an agency that might know of the series' fate? Can anyone provide me Tim Hutton's mailing address. Although Tim didn't come around until much later, it's possible he might have access to his father's archives.
Much obliged. M. Wallace in Vegas
