Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Jim Hutton

Just watched "Hellfighters." A great action film. Loved the story, dialogue and acting. Jim Hutton was fantastic. His pairing with John Wayne made me wonder what has happened to all the manly men; they all seem so soft or ridiculous.

And believe it or not, John Wayne was blasted by the critics for all the reasons that the audiences loved it. I agreethe male characters don't seem to have the 'man of steel' side of menthey seem to focus on the 'gentle' side.

You have to remember that John Wayne's character was based on the legendary oil well fire fighter Red Adair, who while being a manly man (the dude put out oil well fires for Pete's sake; they don't get more manly than that) also had his softer side. He had a family and cared about his people. People like Red Adair aren't the stereotypical "men of steel". Yes, they are strong willed, intelligent and daring, but they're still human beings with feelings and emotions. The movie would have been a comic book if they were all "men of steel" with no real emotions or feelings. I love the film.

Good comments. You are right. Thanks for the reality check. (The reason I love the film is because it teaches the audience something new about which we/audiences rarely, if ever, think about, namely oil well fires and how they are put out and controlled. I was fascinated by the technical info.)

I grew up an oil field brat. Later, Daddy sold ball bivalves, pipeline equipment, and blow out preventers, one of his can be seen in Hellfighters! Way head always been my favorite since I was little girl, and Hutton has been right up there with Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, and Glen Ford. I have to add Tom Selleck to that group, too. I know thus thread was long before Blure Bloods, but Selleck brings back manly man as you call it. There are a handful out there, but I would be hard pressed to think of one under the age of sixty.

As you know, I just watched this film recently at your own suggestion. Soooooooo good. If for no other reason then I really think it was one of Jim's most attractive roles (and that's saying a lot). But it was a really good movie in his own right and I love Katherine Ross, she was so good in Shenandoah (even if I always have to fastforward her last scene) and she was great in this.

Oh yes, I think they both did a good job. So did John Wayne.
Jim looked soooo good in those turtleneck sweaters!
