Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Piper Laurie

    smoke0 — 19 years ago(August 02, 2006 11:52 PM)

Legend has it that her lame studio name held her back from appearing in the film, because the producers felt it was too silly for such a serious film. She would have blown Jack Lemmon away, never mind acting rings around Lee Remick (who was always much maligned as an actress, but I liked her anyway). Real reason I am posting here is due to Mel Gibson's latest antics, since Piper Laurie lent her name and talent to his first real romantic lead role, I have to wonder how she feels about him now

She would have been a great choice for Days of Wine and Roses. I can also see someone like Vera Miles in the role. Lee Remick, however, was excellent. Perhaps in any other year, she and Jack Lemmon would have both won Oscars.

She did a televised version of Days of Wine and Roses on Playhouse 90 opposite Cliff Robertson - - I wonder if it's available on DVD..
Strange, I don't think her name is lame at all..maybe because I've known of her since I was a kid, and so her name never sounded fake to me. I kind of like it.

yes, what's wrong with her name? nothing, as far as I can see. Now Rip Torn, that's a strange name, or Slim Pickins, but who cares? Studio executives who only worry about the bottom line?

Piper has said that after she left her career as a starlet in Hollywood, about 1957, she applied for a stage role and thought she had won it, until she was told by the producer that she was let go because they wouldn't put her name up on the marguee since it would detract from the seriousness of the stage play. She was so upset that she seriously considered changing her name, but was talked out of it by friends like Roddy McDowell, and now she says she is proud of the name, even though she hated it at one time.
