She left in 1987 and disappeared from acting until 1993
Huh? what crap she left to pursue a movie career and between 1987 & 93 did numerous films such as Hello Again, Outrageous Fortune & Troop Beverly Hills, none were box office hits but all remain 80s classic comedies.

FYI - I am a huge fan of her work on CHEERS and a couple of her films.
She left CHEERS because the cast of CHEERS did not get along with her. She was universally despised on the set. Watch the E True Hollywood story for more details. The go into great detail about how disliked she was. All this rubbish about her wanting to raise her child or do movies is just spin. CHEERS was not a place she was made welcome, even when she returned for the finale. As for later projects, Bette Midler (OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE) and Gabriel Bryne (HELLO AGAIN) also publicly trashed her as "unfunny" and "difficult". Whether that's true or not, who knows, but she seems to have a lot of vocal former co-workers.

I liked her role in "Cheers", (thnx for info about how she didnt get along with the other cast), but I like "Cheers" even more. I think her perfect casting as Carol Brady (and the perfect casting of all the Bradys!) that began with "The Brady Bunch Movie" (1995), is my favourite (hot!) of the characters she has portrayed.
                  Uh-huh. I see.

I think she was the most attractive as Carol Brady in 'Bradys in The White House' as she was meatier than usual.

Be careful about getting information from "E True Hollywood," they are known for being complete gossips, and often have a twisted view of the truth for the sake of entertainment.
However, I think she wasn't good friends with everyone on set. The CHEERS cast was known for being quite cliquey, and I think she didn't fit in. Her decision to leave was for the movies, but she said she doesn't regret her decision because it allowed her to spend time with her daughter. Plus, it really benefited CHEERS, as the show progressed with new story lines.
However, I do think the cast was bitter at her for leaving, after all, she was a main character for the first five years. Shelley leaving jeopardized the show. But, she returned for the 200th celebration and the Finale, so she couldn't have been that despised by the cast.

Fan, or not, I commend you for not jumping on the "trash bandwagon" which seems to make its rounds, A LOT on IMDB.
I would trust Gabriel Byrnes review, of just about anyone. I have heard he's delightful to work with, and after all, he was married to Ellen Barkin, who I have heard is difficult even on a sunny day, when her lotto number comes up.
ooopppssy, time for me to get off that bandwagon-sorry, I couldn't resist.
What, just for once in your life can't you be serious?

She wanted to be in movies. She left Cheers because her last movie "outragous Fortune" was a hit. However Bette Midler later said she & Shelly Long was a pain. If you go on Wikipedia it states that "Shelly Long did not get along with the cast & crew of Cheers".

I just read on the imdb bio of Cheers and it says she left in 1993. It doesn't say 1982 - 1986 or whatever.
Oh I see she returned for its series finale

OF was a good film and I consider it an '80's classic'. I thi2000nk 'The Money Pit' is also a classic and potentially Shelly Long's best film.
