Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Myrna Loy

What do you guys think of Myrna's episode of GE Theatre "It Gives Me Great Pleasure"
    http://www.imdb.com/board/10586194/
from 1955? It can be watched and/or downloaded at several websites including archive.org and Jimbo's free classic tv. I was startled how badly photographed she was for this slight little comedy; I realize it was knocked out in a week but surely they could have done better photographing this now middle-aged actress who in some scenes appears perilously close to ugly, with her middle of her mouth dripping down over her teeth looking at times as if she is missing a front tooth! That's to say nothing of the bad lighting for her face and that terrible hairstyle (although Myrna's hair was never one of her good points). Myrna still could be photographed attractively - witness her 1958-60 films but here they just didn't care. No wonder some movie stars avoided tv in the 1950's! The show itself is a mild little "comedy" (actually more of a light drama than anything humorous) with the familiar plot of a female star overworked by her manager/agent/ semi-boyfriend, done before in Bombshell, The Affairs of Annabel, and several other movies. I didn't like the final plot twist
with Myrna ultimately choosing this semi-creep, played by Zachary Scott, over the gentlemanly if mama's boyish Robert Preston
. Still would love to see more of Myrna's 1950's tv appearances but this appears to be the only one that circulates.

If true then no wonder stars of Loy's generation didn't trust television.

And as you said it was probably shot quickly and no one was ever really concerned that about it. I'll check Loy's autobiography for clues.
