Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Myrna Loy

    Mr_Wentworth-Brewster — 19 years ago(May 20, 2006 12:30 AM)

    I've already seen these:
    Manhattan Melodrama,
    The Thin Man,
    After The Thin Man,
    Libeled Lady,
    The Great Ziegfeld,
    Wife vs. Secretary,
    Love Crazy,
The Best Years of Our Lives
and the episode of Columbo which she was in.
I wonder what other good films (apart from the rest of the Thin Man series) with Myrna Loy should I get. Can anyone help?

Just a quick visit - please see posts past for lengthier comments.
      SIX MORE TO CATCH

      1. The Rains Came - Exceptional imperial romance/disaster epic. Myrna's best dramatic performance.
      2. I Love You Again - Brilliant screwball comedy.
      3. Test Pilot - Perhaps the pinnacle of MGM production - great cast, script, action sequences. Adult entertainment with comic bits.
      4. Love Me Tonight - Mamoulian's delightful musical gave Myrna her first real break. She offers scene-thieving support to Chevalier and MacDonald.
      5. Penthouse - Witty, wonderful crime drama with Warner Baxter and Nat Pendleton.
      6. Broadway Bill - An overlooked gem from the Capra/Riskin team. Myrna is hugely appealing.
I've seen about 80 Myrna films, and - if you start with the '33 - '49 stuff, you won't find many duds. Even supposed flops like Parnell are well worth your while, and there are a raft of virtually unknown mini-masterpieces to uncover - Topaze, When Ladies Meet and Whipsaw among them. Enjoy!

Don't leave out "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer" and "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House", both with Cary Grant.

You can't really go wrong with Myrna Loy, but I noticed "Petticoat Fever" hadn't been mentioned and that's a nice little comedy with Robert Montgomery. But, I have to agree that you must see "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer" it's hilarious and also won the Best Screenplay Oscar.
Here's to William Powell and Myrna Loy, one of the greatest acting teams in film history!!!

I like Petticoat Fever, but whether it can be said to rank in the top tier of Myrna films, I'm not sure. Her chemistry with Montgomery is strong, and the film offers escapist, amusing, romantic fare in an unorthodox locale. However, it isn't as sharp, funny or memorable as Libeled Lady or The Thin Man. As a screwball set in a remote snowbound outpost, it forms an agreeably bizarre double-bill with John Carpenter's similarly-set superlative chiller The Thing.
Myrna's films with Cary Grant are great fun, though Mr. Blandings only really achieves the levels of escapist wonderment one desires in the last reel. The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer is indeed a joy. I successfully lobbied for the BBC to show it to commemmorate the 100th anniversary of Myrna's birth - my one notable achievement since winning the egg and spoon race in16d0 primary school. Loy and Grant made their first appearance together on screen in the little-screen 1935 aviation drama, Wings in the Dark, which is also well worth catching. The acting is fine, the story hokey but compelling and the interplay between the leads wonderful.

Libeled Lady, The Best Years of Our Lives, The Thin Man, Love Crazy and Wife vs. Secretary are probably my favorites. But what do IMDB-ers think of the little seen Double Wedding?

I think Double Wedding is great!
Despite the setting, the film has a more "European" feel to it than other Loy/Powell entries. Powell is a delight as a bohemian layabout, sparring neatly with Myrna's good-hearted but uptight businesswoman. John Beal is an absolute delight in support. Though the film is remembered by many for its unexpected slapstick elements, these are fairly sparing, allowing time for plenty of zingy one-liners and memorable minor characters. One of Myrna's most underrated comedies and a real treat for fans.

If you want to see Myrna at her most delectable "Vampiness", look for a copy of THIRTEEN WOMEN. Myrna plays a Eurasian girl who is humiliated by members of an "exclusive" Sorority at her school.
It's an Over the Top film, and was atrociously edited due to censorship. Myrna carries it off, though, and makes you want more. The brief scene when she talks about growing up, and how the 'white' part of her cried out for the care and consideration that the other girls had, that she never knew, broke my heart.
I do hope he won't upset Henry
