In my opinion, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC is a controlled, very honest performance for Viggo. The situation is interesting - he's raised his family in a very different way, non-conformist; and they are smart in ways and subjects that most kids their age wouldn't even begin to know. But he, and they, are not used to being out in the "real world." When the wife/mother dies, Viggo and2000 the children have to come out and live in that world, find their way in it - and for Viggo's character, that is difficult to deal with.
I thought his performance - and, of course, the script - were outstanding. Just my opinion.
Now, let's see what the Oscar nominations turn out to be. -

You can never tell what makes people vote the way they do.
Personally, I was bored stiff by LA LA LAND. MANCHESTER was a better story, emotionally involving; and the young actor playing Casey Affleck's nephew was very good. But the story was slow moving and took longer than it needed to in order to solve or at least deal with the basic problem. Coulda been 100 minutes instead of just under two hours.
And this year, that seems to be the problem (at least for me) with a lot of the movies being offered for nomination. SULLY, on the other hand, is a crisp 96 minutes, done and out. And well done at that. -

Hi Dorothy,
Nice to see you again. I saw the movie online but while the premise was interesting I thought the ending was awful. Seriously, almost as bad as the cheesy ending to The Road (which ruined that movie for me). The kids were all good actors though I was hard put to figure out if the youngest two were boys or girls, lol. The oldest boy was very good but the movie just was not believable. It was a romanticized version of living in an encanted forest which never brings up the hardships they would have had to face and how tough it would have been to bring up very young children in such an environment offhand, winter, cold, snow and wild animals (like bears) spring to mind. It made no sense that much was made of the fact the mother was a Buddist yet
her kids were running around with huge hunting knives, killing deer and eating their hearts raw?
. Was that meant to explain why she went nuts?
. As I said the last third of the movie is so improbable as to ruin the story. So I still don't see why Mr. M.'s performance is supposed to be so outstanding he wasn't even a very good father IMO, albeit a well intentioned one. I don't think
you should abandon your kids
but that's just my opinion -

I haven't seen any of the other awards contenders so I can't compare the other films.

Hi WP, i have not seen this movie, i did see some promo's. Talking about Kids in the forest here though reminded me of the reality show about the Brown Family who have all of these children, mostly grown.who survive in the Alaskan wilderness. They all live together, build their house together, work at all kinds of things, hunt etc.They have about 5 boy's and 2 girlsBoy's (men) named BearBam Bam, etc. Has anyone seen it? Quite interesting to watch. They do have bears, wolves, hard winters, problems of all kinds but seem to be a close family.

I've seen this happen before for lack of a better meta, unless it's a out of the park 3 base grand slam the winners still tend to be those released closest to voting.
For those skeptical of the story line. I don't suggest any walks into the mountains (east or west)
I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it -

Here's a surprise. I was looking through the most recent issue of the Hollywood Reporter and BAFTA had a thank you for everyone (nominees, guests, etc.) who attended the BAFTA Los Angeles "Tea Party" this past week. And Viggo had a picture there, which means he attended.
Since he doesn't generally like awards, it was nice of him to show up for a non-required attendance thing. The BAFTA Tea Party is like the Oscars lunch - a pre-gathering for pictures, etc. and to more informally greet and honor the nominees. I wonder if he will attend the actual BAFTA Awards ceremony - which is in London, Sunday, February 12. It will be broadcast on BBC - and I'm checking to see if that includes BBC America (which we get here, obviously). -

Considering he once ranted at Pedro Almodovar for not respecting an awards show enough after his nomination, I'd be surprised if he ignored his own awards. And please, what actor doesn't like awards and recognition especially from his peers?
