I was a year1c84 old when he died, so I grew up always knowing that he had diedbut don't remember the when, where and how I learned this.
What I do recall was talking to some classmates during recess about the typical nonsense stories regarding jumping off a roof or out a window. It wasn't until many years later that I went to the library and looked up the a micro film copy of the news article. I was most struck at how the tone of the writing was very yellow and completely out of context for the NY Times. That lead me to more research that continues to this day.
As much as no one ever wants to believe that someone can kill themselves, and especially a person so intertwined with our childhood, I'm leaning towards believing that he may have done so, albeit accidentally. He had been on pain killers and also drinking, the combination of which often results in depression. He may have already been in a somewhat depressed state and this was the final straw which pushed him over the edge. In other words, at that moment he was non compos mentis which translates to not being of sound mind.

My mother was still an egg floating about inside of her mother, so I wasn't even a childhood dream yet sigh

I had just gotten home from school and I was 7 y/o and the newspaper had a huge headline that said SUPERMAN IS DEAD.
It was the worst day of my young life.

I wasn't born until 12 years later. But my father knew George Reeves, so I grew up watching the re-runs of the show, knowing what had happened to him. My dad wasn't a close friend, he had done some type of off Broadway acting with him before. My dad never believed the suicide myth and neither do I.

Probably in my crib. I imagine my parents talked about it when it occurred and I over heard them, of course not being able to understand a word 5b4yet.

I was almost 8 months old when he died, but I remember watching Superman a lot in the early 1960s. However, I was an adult when I found out he was shot (remember - no Internet or cable back then.) My parents would have never told me as a child, but I honestly don't remember the exact moment I found out. I do remember being sad about it because I loved that show so much.
But I do remember when JFK died when I was 5. It was all over the TV for sure, and my mom saved all the newspapers from that week and still has them.
