Dunaway had a very good role in this movie; very complex. The problem is that she wasn't vulnerable enough in the scenes in which the audience was supposed to feel sorry for her. I think that's always been her problem as an actress.
By constrast, Natasha's role isn't nearly as complex, and despite her character's circumstances, it seemed as if she was holding back, deliberately trying not to make her character seem weak or vulnerable.
That's why, when she breaks down after being ritualistically raped by Dunaway's husband so that she can have a baby for them, it's such an emotional moment for the audience. And from that moment on we're rooting for her to f238ind a way out.

As for myself, I think Faye Dunaway played Faye Dunaway.
        RIP Natasha Richardson

'The Handmaid's Tale' was the first movie I saw Natasha in and I thought she was wonderful.
You can't really compare her role to Faye's - They're opposites in the story. I loved Faye, too, though, and I do think her character evoked some sympathy - At least I felt badly for her; she was a celebrity back in the day and was reduced to a very subjudated role in the 'new order' of Gilead.
Natasha certainly didn't shy away from the nudity involved; she had a lot of guts to do it
How sad to lose her so young!
Six inches is perfectly adequate; more is vulgar!' (Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Re: An open window).

                Speaking of creepy scenes
                NO MORE WIRE HANGERS!
From MOMMIE DEAREST worked very well for her. But there was no room for any vulnerability in that scene anyway, and I really don't remember any of her other work that called for it.
(Except that scene may have hurt her career. It ranks at the top of my list of most shocking/distasteful scenes)
And the most frightening thing about that movie was how it was based on real life.
                YIKES!

I think they were both brilliant in this filmeach perfectly inhabiting her character. The Dunaway scene that stands out for me is when she was watching the old film of herself as a singer. Her face is a lesson in acting effectively.

Precisely. I felt both actresses gave a great effort.
