with Fred - Top Hat - perhaps not the BEST G&F film, but the most popular
without Fred - tough I'd say a tie between Roxie Hart and Bachelor Mother, as a 'main character'. She was in a handful of big films which had many folks in it, such as 42nd Street, Stage Door, and Gold Diggers of 1933
But you KNOW asking a Gingerologist this is like choosing between their children so any answer works!!!
BTW, if you are interested in Ginger, please go check out my blog, Gingerology at http://jwhueyblog.blogspot.com/
Thanks for the question, RA!!!

Oh, miss Lana! You really know how to ask the most difficult question ever presented on these boards!
And such great answers from one and all to be seen!
For those casual fans who do not study the grand work of the beautiful, wonderful and multi-talented Miss Rogers, some would probably answer with a Fred and Ginger picture, as famously as the Gay Divorcee or Top Hat.
For those nice fans who recognize a Ginger picture when they see one, probably besides her RKO Musicals, you might hear "42nd Street, Stage Door, and Gold Diggers of 1933," as the previous poster very astutely cites.
For those wonderful fans who seek out any and every performance by the beautiful, magnificent and legendary Ginger, Roxie Hart and Bachelor Mother and The Major and Minor certainly stand out as must sees, as duly noted by previous Ginger observers.
Ginger herself cites Primrose Path, Kitty Foyle, Major and Minor and Swing Time among her very personal favorites among her outstanding collection of Drama, Comedy, Musical and Romance films, in which she certainly proves herself Hollywood's most capable actress many times over.
And then she goes on and on from there, not only in superior films before, during and after her amazing string of Musicals, but also in many great television appearances with Miss Ball or Mr. Pidgeon or the star-studded Love Boat lineup.
But all things considered, perhaps Stage Door is even more famous than Kitty Foyle because of its star-studded lineup. Even today, everyone remembers Miss Rogers, Miss Ball, Miss Arden, Miss Miller, Miss Patrick, Miss Collier and their true-to-live portrayals of struggling actresses gathering in that big city boarding house.
And then I was greatly surprised for a long time, shocked even, that Stage Door comes three238 years after Gay Divorcee because, as usual, when our girl Ginger plays a struggling young wannabee, you would never ever guess that she has already danced with the wonderful, multi-talented and amazing legendary Fred Astaire, not once, but in seven perfect films by then!
Thank you for the wonderful and thought-provoking question and all of the grade A+ answers because once they invented sound, the stage was set for the unparalled career of the very beautiful, amazing, and very multi-talented Miss Ginger Rogers to grace our meager lives with the pinnacl5b4e of outstanding entertainment, which has never been matched.
And considering the very, very inferior quality of every garbage film and television show Hollywood tries to crank out now, we, not one of us! cannot hold our breaths to await any actress nearly as great in Drama, Comedy, Musicals or Romance as our sweet and lovely girl Ginger. -

I really enjoyed your breakdown of Ginger Rogers movie career. Since you are such a great GR fan I wonder if you would be willing to check out my brand new Ginger Rogers movie page. I ranked 54 of her movies in 6 different categories..since I have only seen 18 of her movies I am not 100% sure that my overall rankings are accurate.

A film that certainly needs to be kept in the front of this discussion should be "Vivacious Lady," due to it teaming her with James Stewart. Plus it shows her talents in comedy, singing, some dramatic moments, and a little dancing. Thanks to the Oscar-nominated cinematography of the wonderful Robert de Grasse, this film includes some of the best close-ups of her ever taken. While not her most famous by a long shot, it certainly needs to be included in any discussion of her best comedies.

coreymax23, Astaire and Rogers as a team were the Depression's biggest Hollywood moneymakers along with Clark Gable and Shirley Temple. "The Gay Divorcee" and "Top Hat" were 238nominated for best picture Oscars. So were "Stage Door" and "Kitty Foyle". Ginger received an Oscar as best actress for her excellent work in "Kitty Foyle". If anything stinks to high heaven around hereit's YOU!
