Whats up with Roseanne's tan (in the series)?

In season 5-6 Roseanne suddenly appears to have an ever so indiscreet darker tan which kinda breaks her credibility in those episodes as a (-n almost ruined) working class mother struggling to make ends meet. It severly changes the overall contrast in her face making her eyes pop out, giving her a totally different, cold and uncaring look. My question is, was this an experiment in "Pan Cake" makeup that went too far?

I once read somewhere that she had some bad plastic surgery between season 4 and 5 and to cover the "mistakes" until she could have it fixed, she had to wear dark makeup and to go with that the hair had to be dyed darker. Then I read she just wanted a change and that was her latest incarnation so who really knows
