Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Eva Marie Saint

    movibuf1962 — 12 years ago(April 01, 2014 06:22 AM)

Just viewed this new bio interview on Ms. Saint on TCM by Robert Osborne (aired on 3/31/14, but recorded during last year's film festival)- an absolutely fabulous 56 minutes chronicling her life story (she proudly mentions her 61-year marriage to Jeffrey Hayden, children, grandchildren, and that she was [at the time] 88 years old.) Amazingly, her aspiration back in the 1950s was to excel in theater and live television, no mention of films at the moment. A great recollection of how she was in previews of the Broadway-bound 'Mister Roberts,' but was replaced by the time it got to Broadway. Wonderful clips of early Eva- kinescopes from the 'Studio One' days and the first version of 'Trip to Bountiful' as well as, of course, 'Waterfront,' 'Exodus,' 'Grand Prix,' 'Raintree County,' and perhaps the most glamorous and iconic role, 'North By Northwest.' A lovely, wonderfully grounded, and witty lady whom I STILL hope to meet one day as she knocks on 90!!

I agree. She was the best interview I've seen by Osborne. I smiled a lot through that. Besides being talented and attractive, she's the most likeable, charming, and sensible actress I've ever seen. She sure comes across as a wonderful person. She was great with George Segal in "Loving" too. I know that was one of her favorite roles. Of that film, Pauline Kael praised her and said she didn't know of anyone who didn't like her. She was also Brando's best female acting partner, and he did probably the most touching scenes of his career with her. She was wonderful with Bob Hope in "That Certain Feeling" too. It's seldom shown, but was a slightly different type Hope comedy with more feeling. And like with Brando, it was probably because of acting with her. She often makes others seem like nicer people too. She's fun, spunky, and smart. I really like Eva Marie Saint too.
