If I would have seen this when you posted it, I would have agreed. I had the pleasure of seeing North By Northwest on the big screen recently and it was FANTASTIC!
The first time I saw NxNW I thought it was okay. I wasn't impressed compared to PSYCHO, VERTIGO, or REAR WINDOW. It just didn't seem as up-to-par as the others. But something about the big screen did it for me. I LOVE this movie now.
You also say "A lot of Hitchcock later films don't make much sense."
I think maybe TORN CURTAIN or MARNIE or TOPAZ you may not like if you're not a film buff/Hitchcock lover such as myself They are very artful films. Technically wonderfully made films. I can understand people not enjoying them as much as his more popular works though. But I feel his last two films FRENZY and FAMILY PLOT are definitely Classics! FRENZY especially!
If you ever have a chance to see NxNW or ANY Hitchcock film on the Big Screen DON'T HESITATE!!!
