Is it true he's a jerk in real life?

I was never a huge Friends fan But like most people I've seen many episodes. I was flipping through the TV channels and started watching a show that was a "behind the scenes" look at Friends. At one point I thought I remembered hearing David Schwimmer was a bit of a snob or jerk in real life and had a history of treating fan's rather rudely.
I don't know if I got that impression from a headline I saw on a tabloid while I was standing in line at a grocery store, and that's what I was remembering, or if there was any truth behind it. I don't give David Schwimmer much thought, but when I have it's usually been with the impression he was a jerk.
I decided to finally figure out if I was off the mark with what I thought I remembered hearing about him, and figured I see if there was any kind of post about him on it. Can someone set me straight with what sort of person he is away from the camera's? Beyond some fanboy that's mad at my question. -

I would agree with you there. During my first marriage I lived in an upscale metropolitan area and would occasionally wind up around celebrities. I was never very star struck, and many times I wouldn't even realize who I had just walked passed until someone mentioned it. My ex-wife on the other hand was pretty shameless and would approach these people regardless of what they were doing. Which I always found to be rather embarrassing. -

Well I know he never signs autographs. I remember watching Celebrities Uncensored on E! and he was in a parking lot with a paparazzi filming him. A fan came up to him and asked him to sign an autograph and he refused then the pararazzi was like "See I told you dude, he never signs".
I also remember reading that he apparently held a tantrum on the set of Friends once because of a line in the script where Ross says he likes to read Star Trek novels. He thought that was too geeky for his character so it was changed to Spy Novels after he locked himself in his dressing room and wouldn't come out.
Make of that what you will. I get the impression he's a pompous jerk in real life and personally I think celebrities should sign autographs for their fans but he's at least talented and it doesn't stop me enjoying his work as Ross Gellar in Friends. -

The 'jerk' thing was something I meant to edit, but I still think he would be quite pompous in real life, even if he's not a jerk.

When I watch "Friends," I always wonder how he was cast in the role. Everyone else contributes to the storylines in their characters' individual ways, but Schwimmer is just annoying. I find even his face unpleasant to look at and don't believe that any of the women who played his wives/girlfriends would ever give him the time of day. To me, he's just repulsive in every way.

He reminded me of a 6 yr old whiny brat who wanted an ice cream cone or a lollipop. Come mom I want it whining. He was very unlikable and no way hell would he ever have a chance with Rachel or his pretty ex-wife with that whiny attitude. They want a man and don't want to be his babysitter.

I met him unexpectedly a year ago. He was polite and very nice. He does things that he does not seek press for or want the press for (he does a lot to support rape crisis groups). I think he is an actor/writer/director that does not enjoy being a celebrity.

YES. He really isn't nice at all, so much more than just a jerk too. He now lives in NYC, in the East Village. There were numerous articles in the NY press over the years since Friends ended. Most of his neighbors hate him when he bought an old house built in 1852, and just when the city was going to give the house a landmark status, he knocked it down, angering the city and his neighbor because he purchased the house with the intent of demolishing it but failed to notify the city of his intentions. The original house was built in between 2 apartment buildings and I heard some of the demolition damaged the other buildings in the process, which the city expects him to pay for the repairs. It took YEARS to build it, as residents of the adjacent building had to deal with falling bricks and other construction debris, scaffolding and netting for about 3 years. One of his disgruntled neighbors eventually sprayed painted the house with Ross is not cool. But there could be a possible Friends title in there somewhere. The One Where Ross Buys A House and All His New Neighbors Hate Him is very fitting.
I know NBC really wanted us to believe they were all real friends in life, and for the most part they were when it was still on the air. With the exception of David. He never socialized with the rest of the cast. He kept his distance from them. I read somewhere they get together once a year at Courtenay Malibu home and David never attends. The closest cast members are Jennifer, Courtenay and Matthew still are friends. He seemed to cause the most trouble with the producers, writers and co-stars. For me during it's run, I disliked Ross the most, can't stand his whiny voice.
