I was wondering if there are more Arab-American actors like Tony Shalhoub who also play white characters! I think it's amazing that he doesn't just play typical Arab characters in movies but also 'American' characters! He does that convincingly!!

Maybe because he is "white" (whatever the hll that means since he is caucasian which is the techincal term for being "white" [although since like most caucasians his skin has pigment he is not white at all.)
And he is American, first and foremost so of course he is able to play "American" characters (again whatever the hll that means since the only "true americans" are the Native Americans, the rest of us are immigrants from other continents, it is just a matter of when our families immigrated). -

He was born in Wisconsin and lives in this country. That means he already is an american. He's playing what he is, and whites aren't all americans and all americans aren't white. I've noticed Denzel Washington tends to play a lot of americans as well.

No, I really didn't know what you meant since your post is patently racist. What is the significance of your quotation marks? Are those special "I'm going to say something very racist but it's no longer racist because of the tick marks placed on either side of the word american" ? Those are some very special quotation marks indeed.
You start a thread just amazed at the fact that an American actor is actually on TV playing American charactersstoooooopid. Then you go on to say a white actor actually plays white characters-stooooooooooopid.- People born in the middle east or born
here
who are of middle eastern descent are considered mediterranean, and mediterraneans are classified by this country as caucasion. This includes Egyptians, and if you look at a map, you'll see that Egypt is located on the African continentthey're "white." Italians are also considered mediterranean and fall into this same category. I've been Italian16d0 my whole life and on those little forms with race, I check the same box Tony would check: "White, non-Hispanic." - People born in Wisconsin do not need green cardsthey are American citizens, and so far there has been no public outcry demanding they be put into immigrant or refugee status. If this upsets you, I suppose you could compose a bill and submit it to congress.
Here's another news flash: I've noticed Tony plays an awful lot of male characters. Not sure if that's intentional or if he just has a special talent for that sort of thing, but I think he's being stereotyped.

Wow, that is one frustrated response! And VERY paranoia! Do you always draw very insulting conclusions? You shouldn't becauce then YOU're the one who's being very insulting!
My post is really not that hard to understand! I am from Europe and of Northern African descent (hence 'white' as well according to Americans) and I was just curious when I saw a few performances of Shalhoub. There was NOTHING racist about my post! With white and 'American' characters I obviously meant people from western origin (pelgrims). I mean; would a middle eastern/mediterranean person would ever be casted as a WASP or a typical Christian from the midwest? Think not!
Typical by the way that you also quote 'white' yourself!
BTW, sorry for my poor English!

You started with me. Apparently you don't like getting rude replies in response to rude replies. Don't snap at people and get condescending with people who reply to you, and your responses will be more polite. You didn't say you were from somewhere else.
You also didn't say that you thought it was interesting or odd that a person of middle eastern descent would be playing so many non-arab roles. Look at your topic titleyou're saying it's odd a white actor plays a lot of white characters. Then I read the post and you're saying it's odd an american plays so many american characters. I'm not supposed to be confused by this?? The issue raised in your post is Shalhoub's nationality and his skin color. That's not racist??? The roles available to arabs for the past 25-30 years are terrorists. Would you rather he was playing those kinds of roles? He did it once. Was that not enough?

You keep putting words in my mouth and continue reacting frustrated! Sorry if you feel the way you feel but don't take it out on me! Another funny thing is that you are EXACTLY stating what I was thinking myself and what was the reason for this topic in the first place; namely that arabs normally play terrorist roles and NOTHING else. No 'normal' characters. Shalhoub makes a nice change! It's strange how you keep contradicting yourself.

yvettesgonefishing — 17 years ago(October 23, 2008 02:13 PM)
Sorry if you feel the way you feel
, which is the same as "Sorry you feel that way" which is the battle cry of rude people trying to not take responsibility for MAKING people feel that way.
I didn't put any words in your mouth. YOU put them there. First you say it's surprising a white actor would be playing white characters and then you're surprised an american actor would be playing american characters. Why did you say those things? Because Tony Shalhoub is a white actor and an american. There is NO other way to translate the addled ramblings that compose your original post.
If you don't want to confuse people, stop saying things that make absolutely no sense to anyone with a functioning brain. Then you say I'm contradicting myself. I'm sure you see me contradicting myself because you're having a problem following logic, but I haven't contradicted myself even once. Please take your racist views elsewhere.

Anyone with a 'functioning' brain will see that YOU are way out of line here and started being extremely rude and insulting. Shut up about me being 'racist'. How dare you? You don't know me and you could try to be a LITTLE considerate with someone whose first language isn't English. Still, I've made myself reasonably clear ( I even just let a friend of mine read my posts for back-up and he says I've been perfectly clear and you are overreacting like hell). The reason I said I was sorry you feel the way you feel was meant to be kind and was because of the frustrated way you are responding. It had nothing to do with me!
I think you are a very negative person who insults other people and yet claim that YOU are the hurt one. Poor you! I have no respect for people like you and I've had it with this conversation.
Say what you want, I don't care anymore -

First you're condescending and patronizing, and now you're trying to say you were trying to be nice? You don't have a problem with English, and yes I do know you insofar as the way you express yourself in here. Your posts are racist. How dare you be a racist and 5b4make a racist post and then claim not to be racist. You're hilarious.

Please buy a mirror and look in it. YOU are the hilarious and pathetic one!
You're so stupid and frustrated that you don't even realise that I am Arab myself and the reason for my post 'pride' was. Sad little person.
But hey, if it makes you feel better! Sure, I am a true racist! I hate black people, Arabs, Italians, Spicks, Jews, fagsthey're all disgusting!
Here you go, hope you feel better now! This is the best way to respond to people like you, in the end, this is all what you want to hear, so enjoy!!!
Love and kisses (but please first wash your garlic and olive-oil mouth)! -
yvettesgonefishing — 17 years ago(October 23, 2008 04:02 PM)
Oh, now you're an arab too? Wow. If I was actually an arab starting this topic (and not, God-forbid, just saying that so far into the thread in order to win an unwinable argument) I'm pretty sure I'd have said that right off the bat. Thanx for outing yourself as a racistfinally. Does Mommy know you've been playing on her computer all day? Little kids are the only ones that think you can really get back at someone by calling them names. rofl. You're a big old poopy head. So there!

If you actually BOTHERED to read my previous comments you'd already know I was an Arab, since I already said that! So, read the previous messages and find another reason to be ashamed of your childish behaviour!
But people like you don't actually READ! No way, you SCREAM because you see something you don't quite get (or don't WANT to!!!) and lack any intelligence to properly interpret the message and keep on insulting the other person for no real reason. You probably lead such an unhappy and frustrated life that you feel the need to anonimously call names, scream as loud as you can in order to feel better about yourself. I call that SAD, my Italian friend and I DO feel sorry for you!
But I am also done with this 'conversation' so I'm afraid you'll have to find another 'victim' to scream at! Good luck with that! -

What a nitwit. You just said you were arabnowhere before that. You're about as arab as I am. And yes, I am very ashamed at your childish behavior. And yes, I can see from your post that you live in another country and struggle with English. rofl. One lie after another. I feel so sorry for racists like you. I can't believe they're still making people like you. Thanx for the laughs.

And by the way; thanks for your compliment. You not wanting to believe that I'm from Europe and English isn't my first language suggests that my English isn't as bad as I thought! -

You are 'laughing' so much it's not believable, my friend. Seems way to forced! Shows even more how frustrated you are and anyone here can see that! You are making a fool out of yourself and that's tragic!
You are such a cliche. Not wanting to respond like a real woman (man?) when I confront you with the stupid mistake you've made and continue cursing and being a little Italian baby. Poor you

You're still here? You said three posts ago that you were leaving. You've given me lots of reasons to laugh. You're a joke. Aren't you late for a Klan meeting? Run away little boy.

You damn right I'm still here, Miss Frustration!!
It's so unbelievable that one can act so pathetic and unreasonable and continues posting with constant 'laughs' it makes ME laugh! So I'm enjoying myself, even more because you don't see the IRONY in your own posts and the saddest/funniest thing is; you probably don't even know what I'm talking about! No, Miss 'I feel sooo discriminated by society, boohoo', that requires a brain and something called 'respect' and class, all of which you obviously lack
Treat me with your next frustrated and forced humorous post! You are becoming a caricature of yourself!
