He looks like an Arab gentleman to mewhere I'm from (the Detroit metro area, which btw, has the largest known population of Americans of Middle Eastern descent outside of the Middle East) I see Arab (and Arab-American) folks all the time, and they come in all different colors,shapes and sizes, just like everyone else on the planet. Regardless of all that,I used to like the show MONK when it was on because I have OCD myselfit was fun to watch a show with a character who dealt with having a very extreme version of it. I also remember him as the cab driver on WINGS for years back. It was interesting to see him play a Jewish gentleman in the indie movie AMERICAN EAST (worth checking out if you can find it) which is a drama about Arab-Americans and how they deal with life/being always stereotyped as terrorists in a post 9/11 world.
As for the111c original poster of this thread, I didn't see anything racist about anything she said, and the second poster blew the subject ALL up out of proportion to ridiculous levelsseriously, it was not even THAT damn serious! It seemed more like J, or whatever her name was, was upset that the subject of race was even brought up in the first place. Just bringing up the subject of race is NOT racist, because race is something people have MADE a major issue of in life, especially white people, who have always made it an issue for their own benefitI can also say that ALL Arab folks aren't seen as white, some of them aren't white at all, and there are also black Arab folks (like the Arab-African peoples of North Africa for example) and my cool-as-hell sister. Okay, I'm done talking about this. -

Amazing how many people, in general make the most outlandish statements, based on their ignorance. Tony is Maronite Lebanese; Lebanese Christians have taken a stance in opposition to Pan-Arabism in Lebanon, and have never considered themselves, Arab.
There is nothing wrong with Arab people but Tony Shalhoub is not Arab.

Levantine people are distinct from "Arabs", as in people on or near the Arabian peninsula. Compared to actual Arabs, Levantines can be much lighter skinned, and in accordance with their phenotype, they genetics predictably cluster closer to Europeans than with pure Arabs. Cypriots are usually the closest people the Lebanese cluster near outside of the Levant, followed by Sicilians and Ashkenazi Jews. As a Near Eastern people, they are Middle Eastern and Mediterranean hybrids. I will grant you the fact that Lebanese Muslims are Arab admixed, but Lebanese Maronites are descendants of the Phoenicians with some Western European admixture from the Crusaders. Religion is a serious factor in division in Lebanon, so Christians almost always never intermarry with Muslims and vice versa, so what results are difference directions of clustering between the two groups.
The first part of my post wasn't meant to be entirely pedantic, but mainly to provide the necessary background information needed in answering your question. Seeing as how Mr. Shalhoub is a Maronite, he can pass as a Mediterranean European or an American Jew to lesser trained eyes. -

Why are people obsessed with having to qualify what kind of American an American person is? If an American guy's parents were originally from England, would you call him "English-American"? What if his parents were originally from Canada would you call him "Canadian-American"? If not, why not?
I'm born in the UK, so my nationality is British. My parents were born in Hong Kong. People often ask me where I'm from (as I obviously look Asian), and I say "the UK". They then follow it with "But where are you from originally?", and my answer is, "I'm originally from Liverpool. It's in the UK. The Beatles came from there - you might have heard of them."
Some people persist and ask, "What I mean is, where's your family from?" So if that's true, why didn't they ask that in the first place? What if my parents were actually born in the UK, but their parents were from Hong Kong?
But some others instead say, "But you don't look British". Okay, so what does a British person look like? It'd be just as stupid a question as, "What does an American look like?" Morgan Freeman was born in the USA - you can't tell me he doesn't look like an American.
So why is it people confuse nationality with ethnicity? It's not that difficult. Nationality depends on where you're born and has nothing to do with colour or ethnicity. An American is someone born in America - not that hard to understand. Tony Shalhoub was born in American, so it's completely natural for him to play an American. He's white anyway - he's definitely neither black nor Asian. -

Like I said before, all Arab-Americans(or Arabs) aren't considered white, especially here in the U.S.I think it depends on what part of the country they're in, and how long they're been in the U.S.I can tell you, they're definitely not considered culturally "white" in the Detroit metro area, that's for certainespecially since 9/11. -

no way he is arab? really? bc i always thought he was hispanic or spanish? he always seemed this way on wings anyway. so does this prove that hollywood is racist against arabs the fact that they don't cast arab characters with arab actors?
he really played convincingly a spanish or greek character on wings!
